Salthill airshow have just confirmed an RAF Eurofighter will make an appearance at this years airshow. I saw one at an airshow in the UK last year. Was superb.

USAF Thurderbirds also making an appearance.

    Anyone going?

Yes we have confirmed an RAF Eurofighter Typhoon will be present but the RAF Red Arrows will not.
The Thunderbirds will also be doing a full practice display either on the Friday or Saturday before the Airshow but it will most likely be on the Saturday.

    Regards,
    David.

Are you one of the organisers Steyr? This could be very interesting getting the inside scope on practice days. I'm sick of spending all Friday and Sat out the prom waiting for a flyby.

The Typhoon was a scoop. Was very impressed with the one at the UK airshow last year. Are you hoping for any other fast jets? Any Tornados perhaps?

My father is the Organiser. The Tbirds are defiantely in for a Practice but i dont know what day yet. No mention of a Tornado as the GAF ( Luftwaffe ) can not do Airshows anymore unless its in the Static role and as you know Salthill is a Seaside show. The RAF have not mentioned a Tonka ( Tornado ) but who needs one when we have a Typhoon and the RAF also confirmed a Grob Tutor, il keep you posted if you wish for practice timings when i know them and am allowed to post them.

Thanks for your kind words, as for more fast Jets its early days yet.

No problem also just found that the only RAF Jet Demo anywhere will be the Typhoon so more or less its a no for anything like the F3, GR4, GR7 or Jag from the RAF as they have severly cut back on displays.

Thats a shame. Oh well the Typhoon will make up for it. Any thoughts on any other US jets making an appearance?

T-Birds should be an interesting contrast after the Red Arrows, et al. Most of the European teams are a sort of aerial art with huge emphasis on pilot skill and co-ordination. The American display teams (TBs, BAs, and a few Europeans, like the Russian Knights) are 'power shows', with as much emphasis on aircraft capability as pilot capability.

You think the drawback in RAF displays is bad. A reliable source has posted on another forum that the Flygvapnet ( Swedish AF ) is cancelling all airshow appearances except for those scheduled to be held at Malmö and Umeå. Reasons cited are costs and that the air force is overstretched trying to support EU operations!

Puts things into perspective with the RAF display cutbacks doesn't it!!!!, thats the way it seems to be going with alot of Air Arms like look at Team Merlin, they will be in a Static role only and they are gutted about it. You can send out letters to every air arm asking for participation but its up to them if they want to come or not, nine times out of ten either they are not allowed go due to Budget or they may not even have a say in the matter about where they go. As for the Russians well thats a no im afraid it costs too much.

Check this out its from ukar.co.uk its shows how the RAF can only do so much so we are very lucky to be getting a Typhoon!

This is going to be a long post but worth reading . . .

Rumours concerning the RAF’s support for airshows this year have been rife for many weeks. The new RAF Engagement Strategy has, and will continue to have, a profound effect on how the RAF interacts with the public. Demonstrating capability is a key element, as is maintaining the spectacle and heritage aspects provided by the three air display RAF teams. Many will be aware of the operational and funding issues that have caused delays in announcing display assets levels for this year – both in terms of aircraft type and number of displays performed. Pleased to announce that the “fog of war” has now lifted to reveal the plot for the 2007 season.

Some credentials first – this is the RAF Event Team! We are charged with implementing many aspects of the RAF Engagement Strategy through both ground and air effects. To make it clear, we task RAF display aircraft and the teams that are made available for engagement duties. We put together those “specials” such as a particular formation to commemorate a particular event. We process thousands of requests per year for individual displays and flypasts. We work with event organisers to try and achieve the best effect for both parties.

So, this is the oracle! No rumours of hearsay here – just the hard facts. Very hard facts!

Role capability scenarios will be taking place at the following events:

Spirit of Adventure (Abingdon) – 26-27 May 07
    Biggin Hill – 2-3 Jun 07
    Cosford – 10 Jun 07
    Kemble – 17 Jun 07
    Waddington – 30 Jun – 1 Jul 07
    Fairford – 14-15 Jul 07
Spirit of Adventure (Kinross) – 25-26 May 07

The scenario will be approx 25 mins in duration and will represent real RAF air power roles - expect air defence, offensive support, ISTAR, troop insertion and close air support. It is intended to keep the scenario as “tight” as possible to maintain spectacle but clearly this comes second to safety issues. Narrative and special effects will assist in bringing the scenario to life, as seen at Leuchars last year but on a far larger scale. The scenario will be delivered by x2 teams made up of the following assets:

    Team 1 – x2 Typhoon, x2 Tornado GR4, x2 Hawk, x1 E-3D, x1 C-130J, x2 SH (Merlin, Chinook – TBC)

    Team 2 – x2 Tornado F3, x2 Harrier GR7/9, x2 Hawk, x1 E-3D, x1 C-130J, x2 SH (Merlin, Chinook – TBC)

The following teams will be displaying this year with number of appearances similar to last year:

    Falcons, Red Arrows and BBMF.

The following solo display aircraft will be displaying this year with number of appearances similar to last year:

Tutor, Tucano, Hawk (No 208 Sqn) and Typhoon.

The following solo display aircraft will not be displaying this year:

Tornado F3, Tornado GR4, Hawk (No 100 Sqn) and C-130J.

This reduction in solo displays compared to recent years is independent of the RAF Engagement Strategy and the requirement for scenarios. It has never been a case of “scenarios or solos”. Without the scenarios, RAF involvement in the 2007 season would be extremely thin. In fact to quote “F16” in an earlier post, the scenarios will provide the only opportunities to see some of the “old friends” (ie Tornado F3, Harrier GR7/9 and C-130) as well as some of the “new friends” (ie E3-D).

We are trying hard to get the very best use of what is available. The “50 Golden Years of the BBMF” show at Duxford on 5 May 07 is the result of a close collaboration between BBMF, IWM and the Events Team. This will be a very special event offering unprecedented access to BBMF aircraft and crew. All the flying will be BBMF-based and will include novel and unique items.

Each of the major shows will include at least one “signature image” – a formation that will provide both a lasting memory and an exceptional photographic opportunity. I am unwilling to give details on exactly what is planned for each show as that is down to the individual organiser. Suffice to say opportunities will be many.

Spirit of Adventure represents a novel approach to aviation-based entertainment taking the Theatre in the Air concept on to another level. In pure terms of display assets, these are big shows. However, it is the combination of filmed and live action that makes these events special. It may not be entirely to the taste of the hardened enthusiast but may well introduce an entirely new audience in to the wonderful world of airshows.

The reductions in solo displays will hurt the smaller shows the most. This is regrettable but unavoidable. Those of you who know me as both a commentator and enthusiast will know the strength of personal feelings I have in this area. However, we will take the RAF to those events that offer the best engagement. This does not preclude any single event and I am completely open to approaches from Organisers who have something extra to offer. Some events will inevitably have to change if they are based upon the RAF providing inexpensive items for the flying programme. Some (many!) of us have thought that change is long overdue.

I follow the thoughts and feelings expressed by UKAR members with great interest – both personal and professional. You views do count. You views are important. Your contribution to the UK airshow scene is much valued. I know what I have described in this post will not be particularly well received by all but thought you deserved the facts. Rest assured that there is no lack of effort or enthusiasm coming from the RAF in supporting this forthcoming season. We are all doing our very best overcome some unpalatable truths and deliver the best we can.

    Original post.

Even the French are only doing RIAT this side of the channel. And The German Military will only display Their Aircraft at Airshows in the Static Role only, all flying displays have been cancelled. :( Thats the way it is going,so be happy with what were getting.

    Hi Guys,
I'm looking for any boat owners around the bay to join the Peace Flotilla during the War Show.
While little boys like to look at these weapons as toys, they are part of the war machine that is wreaking death and destruction around the world and part of a PR offensive by US/UK in Ireland.

Why dont you go and protest somewhere more meaningful than taking the easy option of fannying around Galway Bay in a fancy boat. I hear Afghanistan is nice this time of year...

there's a massive arms fair in Shanghai in July, the Chinese will be flogging, as in actually taking cash orders for, vast quantities of small arms, attack helicopters and fixed wing aircraft, most of which will go to delightful governments like Sudan.

interestingly, the Typhoon which will be displaying at Salthill (but not as a sales pitch - Ireland can't afford them) is fitted with only one non-Precision Guided Munition - its gun. contrast that with most of the stuff the Chinese will be flogging to various despots and kleptocrats (i mean worthy comrades standing upto western imperialism by, er... killing their own people and robbing them blind) that wouldn't know a PGM if it walloped into it from 15,000ft.

i can get you the address if you like, perhaps we'll see you on TV with your placard.....

    Now,now,now,lads and lasses.
He has a perfectly democratic right to protest at an airshow! It's because of the likes of good folks who have served and serve in armed forces.Twits like this have the right to wave homemade placards, without fear of being shot on sight or being slung in a dungeon for 40 years. Hope however they all do get seasick:D

of course he has an absolute right - and indeed civic duty - to protest against whatever he sees fit to protest about. i just wondered whether perhaps he was going to protest - even from a safe distance - about an arms fair that really will result in a very significant number of civilian deaths, or whether his angst was purely directed at anything British or American and this happened to be a convenient - and safe - target while ignoring, because its not relevent to his actual agenda, rather than the one he professes, an event that will cause far more suffereing than any air/war show ever will.

    Jessep: You want answers?
Kaffee (Tom Cruise): I think I'm entitled to them.
    Jessep: You want answers?
    Kaffee: I want the truth!
Jessep: You can't handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has walls. And those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives...You don't want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall.
We use words like honor, code, loyalty...we use these words as the backbone to a life spent defending something. You use 'em as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide it! I'd rather you just said thank you and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you're entitled to!

Tickets? What Tickets? The Salthill Airshow is TOTALLY FREE, its held every summer along the Salthill Promenade on the shores of Galway Bay, Ireland.

This years Air show takes place at 3PM on Sunday June 24th. I would advise making a weekend out of it as some of the Acts will do practice displays on the Friday and Saturday.....
