Was listening to some tracks from an album A Strangely Isolated Place on Pandora. Very interesting. Theres some real indie influence there as well, can hear some My Bloody Valentine there.

Before I go and buy the album just wondering if anyone else has heard of this guy or the albums and whats your opinions

Really like his stuff - so atmospheric. And you're right, he cites My Bloody Valentine as one of his biggest influences. Saw him live last year in Dublin and between the music and the visuals it was a stunning show. Check out some of his remixes of other peoples stuff too and collaborations. His third album is due out later this year I think.

I've got his Far Away Trains Passing By album and was pretty disappointed after initially getting hooked on 1 or 2 interesting atmospheric tracks. But I haven't heard any of the rest of his stuff so I'm not gonna judge the guy.

Yeah, not helpful, I know. Sorry ;) Let us know what the album is like if you do get it though.

yet again the curse of one good track (clear day) but mediocre album.

TBH I have never found anything even close to Boards of Canada, Autecre or Plaid. I might even start a new thread asking what people listen to that's similar.

Theres so much terrible music in the Genre, Animals on Wheels, The Crystal Method... Pure ****e

You might check out Boulderdash. Not as snazzy as Autechre but seems to have a little more depth than Ulrich Schnauss.

I have had a listen to the new album "Goodbye" ,,,not great truth be told. The mix is all wrong looks like he was trying to get a "wall of sound" vibe but has failed.

Looks like he has joined a UK band called "Long View" as a keys player, he has done some remix work in the past for them.

A strangely isolated place is much, much better than trains. Still not sure on Goodbye as I've yet to listen to it in one sitting...

wouldn't imagine what on earth kind of a genre you're thinking of that you can fit plaid and the crystal method (who you rightly assess) into?

Theres loads of extremely excellent BOC/Ulrich Schnauss type stuff out there... check out Christ. (his Pylonesque EP is quite stunning, better than Music Has The Right imo.), also Casino Vs. Japan (both Back To Hawaii and Whole Numbers Play The Basics are excellent).

On topic though... my favourite Schanuss record is Far Way Trains.. it just has a much better flow to it than A Strangely Isolated Place. I'd echo tyranny's views.. the guy is excellent live (though he was without the visuals when I seen him at DEAF in the storehouse a few years back).

All of the above wouldnt really be anything to do with Ulrich Schnauss, not the same kind of music really, even though JH does the odd "downbeat" thingy.....

Yeah he is playing Dublin soon too, dunno though if I'll go or not. I like his music but it's the type of music that you listen a couple of times and initially say 'wow' and then the CD gathers dust :pac: IMO anyway.

On another note, Plaid are playing in Crawdaddy sometime early June, gotta get to that!

It was the opposite way for me. When one of the lads proposed him to get for Stress!!, I had a listen and wasn't that blown away. As I listened to it more it really grew on me. Looking forward to this gig now avec serious impatience...

I thought it was cool, and I'm not even a big fan of Ulrich Schnauss. His table of gear was set up so you could see exactly what he was doing. Was a nice chilled out gig with a great atmosphere.

hehe :D ... Le Sac vs. Pip, next Thursday in De Burgo's. Tickets are on sale there and at www.stresssurrounds.com/tickets

    :D

My opinion... there were a hell of a lot of factors beyond our control that day that made running the gig extremely stressful and hampered my enjoyment of it. However, Airiel (who came as part of the package rather than our booking) were absolutely superb, blew me away, and Ulrich Schnauss had a distinctly captive audience - a really unique opportunity to be up close and personal to the music and the musician. He did a 20min encore, which would suggest that he quite enjoyed himself too :D

    Any report.

I really need to catch this guy live...

I saw him in the Sugar club last night, he was very good. He layered lots of sounds and textures. I saw him in 2005, I thought he was better then as the tunes were more melodic and structured. I won't go into how awful the guitar bands that played before him were.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,322 ✭✭✭ian_m

It was a lovely set. I've been listening to his music for a few years now and it was great to see him and hear some sort of a live set. Very glad I went and I'd hope to see him back soon.

If you want to get an idea of what it was like have a look here.

    Cheers for link,

I have never seen him yet live.

Nobody's home is one of my favorite tracks, amazing.

Someday hopefully soon I'll catch him live.
