hi all i'm looking to get a soundcard but not got a clue what to get.
i'm using onboard at the mo on my p5b dlx and cant get surround sound workin propery so any reasonable card will be an improvement.

so what card would you guys recommend?
also does it improve gaming preformance (frame rate)?

Digital or analogue surround sound you trying to get going as that impacts the choice of soundcard ?

Also you may not need a new card if you resolve the problem with the onboard audio what make is it ? (Edit: looked it up it's SoundMAX)

Have you tried updating the sound driver.

    hi 8T8,
it is listed as "soundmax integrated digital hd audio" under device manager.
i have tried lots of drivers 4 it with no luck.

You don't really need digital unless you already have a capable sound system with digital inputs.

As for the problem at hand well not sure where your going wrong really all the cables should be plugged in and it is just a matter of setting it to 5.1 mode in the sound cards control panel and also checking the Windows speakers control panel as well to make sure it is set to 5.1 mode.

Be aware that you will only get surround sound on movies or audio that has surround sound to begin with that vast majority of games do not support surround sound. There are specialist sound cards out their that real time encode everything into surround sound but I'm not sure if it is really worth it.

Anyway as for a sound card well this is what I would go for X-Fi Music Edition, a good card and will help a little bit with FPS.

    thx again 8T8.
yeah prob i'm having is with the jacks.it detects the wrong speakers/headphones when i plugthe in.only can get rear or front working never both at once.tried all sorts of combinations and settin them manually but still no luck.best combo i have is front speakers working using rear jacks and headphones/mic using front audio.
never had probs with speakers until got new mobo. lol i threw out a old soundblaster card a while ago...doh!!!!!
    thx again,

I got the X-Fi Music edition for 70 in PC World - so when you add postage costs onto that, it works out far cheaper then buying it online.
