Peates on parnell street in dublin chip all their DVD players so that they are multi-region, or at least they did up til recently (as i was looking for a muti-region one myself)

Failing that, most DVD players can be modded to multi-region with just a few clincks of the remote control. If you find a player you like, google it to see if it can be hacked to multiregion. Honestly, a lot can be, and it is very easy to do.

You could just buy any DVD and make it region free.

    http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks.php

I made mine region free with a few simple clicks of the remote control.

you can use PC based DVD tools like DVD Decrypter/DVD Shrink to re-burn the movies sans region coding ;)

How the heck did you get it wrong? Its a few button presses and a code.

Contact the manufacturer. You were just pushing buttons ;)

I don't know, but I did. The player didnt seem to be responding so I switched it off and tried again and it just said "Region invalid".

It looks like Region Coding Enhancement (RCE)

    see

    http://www.dvdtalk.com/rce.html

has caused your problem (assuming that you haven't just set up the player for another region instead of making it region 0, in which case skip straight to the second option)

    OPTION 1

there is a work around for a Hitachi DVP-250 on that site that might be worth trying

    1. Turn on device
    2. Open tray and put in DVD (don't close it!)
    3. Press "Direct Search"
    4. Press the blue right-button two times
    5. Press "Enter"

    OR

    OPTION 2

re-enable the region coding as shown on the video help website

    http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks.php?select=Hitachi+DVP345E

Press POWER to power on the player
Press EJECT to open the tray

While the tray is open, press DISPLAY to enter setup menu
Press the following four DIGITS to enter password (1, 1, 1, and 1)
    Press SELECT

Press DIGITS from 0 to 6 to enter new region code
    0: MULTI-REGION
    1 to 6: REGION 1 to REGION 6

(press 2 instead of 0 to set the player as a region 2 machine)

A message OK is displayed on the TV.

You can verify the new settings by :
closing the DISC TRAY (no disc is displayed on the tv set)
The type MENU and 1,3,5 and 7 you will be able to see if the change is done.

If you search on this site:

    http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks

    you will find hacks for:

    R3380 PHILIPS DVD RECORDER
3430V PHILIPS DVD & VHS RECORDER
    R3460 PHILIPS DVD RECORDER 250GB
HX720 SONY 160GB DVD RECORDER (using a PDA instead of a remote!)

by simply typing the model number e.g. R3380, without the brand or anything else, into the SEARCH box.

The others may also have hacks available if you search for them.

Beware of the problem that making your player region free may result in certain dvds not playing, see http://www.dvdtalk.com/rce.html

Perhaps you could use a cheaper/existing player as a region free device?
