M1 is now the longest motorway. But I suppose you can say that Dundalk to Portlaoise is 90% motorway save for a section of 3 lane DC from Naas to the Red cow.

... and that 2 lane section of builders rubble between the toll bridge and the Red Cow Roundabout.

We're only a developing nation. Remember 15 years ago the only motorway in this country was a couple of miles in south west Dublin

It is something that I have been wondering about lately....why doesn't Ireland have motorway service stations like those in the UK? Granted the M50 might be a bit busy/crowded to support one...but the M1/M4 could surely do with one or two.

We don't have a motorway long enough to necessitate service/rest stops in this country.

As for the trucker taking a piss on the side of the road, when you’ve got to go you’ve got to go. It’s a hell of a lot quicker to pull in at the side of the road, piss and go again than it is to decide to stop in such a place, leave the road, park the vehicle, get back to the road…

How long does a motorway need to be for it to be long enough?
Its fine for someone e.g. a couple with young kids, to drive from Portlaoise to the Border without stopping?
"When you’ve got to go you’ve got to go" is all well and good but as you are only allowed stop on a motorway in case of emergency or breakdown and AFAIK taking a wizz is not an emergency!
