    Students Against Climate Change
A group started up about a month ago called Students Against Climate Change. The idea was to organise a campaign to put pressure on the Irish Government and to start taking real steps to cut Ireland"s greenhouse gas emissions. With the election coming up, the government will be especially vulnerable to public pressure on this issue.

    Demonstration, this Friday 13th 1pm
This Friday we are holding a demonstration in Dublin City Centre. We are meeting outside the Dáil at 1pm, and then moving to the Department of the Environment. The event is designed to be as interactive and lively as possible, with juggling, drums, music and set pieces depicting some of the effects of climate change.

The Union of Students in Ireland, Friends of the Earth and students and other people from all over the country have joined the campaign.

So we would very much appreciate it if you joined us in our demonstration this Friday. People power has made a difference before -for example, in 1987 public pressure on governments brought about a Global Treaty on CFCs and prevented further destruction of our Ozone Layer. Now it is time to make our voices heard in order to save our climate and our whole way of life from irreparable damage.

    When and Where:
If you are in UCD, free buses are leaving from the Student Centre at 12.15pm. If you are not in UCD, then meet us outside Dáil Eireann (off St Stephen"s Green) at 1pm. Bring your friends and whoever you can. It promises to be a fun event, and afterwards we will have an open meeting to discuss what will be the next step of the campaign.

thousands of students all exhaling vast amounts of carbon dioxide in the one place, take that global warming! :)

But seriously, what does this demonstration hope to accomplish? As if Bertie and co will listen to the kind of folks who are normally seen littering glen of the downs in the name of saving trees. I have always felt quite strongly on the issue, but if we raise awareness in the home, we can cut a huge amount off the demand on the national grid. Sensible use of lighting, hot water heating, more efficient home design (ok, so that lies with the builders).

What else can/will the government do except make some idle promise about cutting C02 to 1997 levels by the next millenium?

I think this campaign is trying to get more of a variety of people actively involved in speaking out against climate change than "the kind of folks who are normally seen littering glen of the downs in the name of saving trees".

I for one think its great and whether the demands are met or not in the short-term at least it will get people thinking about what they as individuals can do [Power of One etc.] and also publicity on a larger scale getting people/politicians to sit up and cop on to what is happening around them and find ways to combat it. Sure tús maith leath na hoibre :)

Are they all going to stand together and shout at the climate?
