Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

This may sound a bit strange but i've had a few people onto me now over the past few days about XP slowing down and i've noticed it myself too. The overall running speed and boot up times have got slower for all of us
Anyone else experiencing the same ?

Are these people on the same network as you, or how are they related? I assume we're not talking strangers on the street ;)

meh, its brainwashing. Chances are your pc is the same as it was before, only them moaning about it has got you thinking yours is slower. A couple of simple things, clean up your desktop - such a simple thing which for some reason speeds up your pc..

If its the internet thats running slow, chances are its your ISP. ISP's have a nack for putting the blame of their shoddy work on your perfectly configured pc.

It's slower than it ever was, boot up is taking near twice as long and as for stuff on my PC it's pretty much empty and only icon on the desktop is the bin.

Internet isn't effected, just program load up/running, boot up time have slowed down. I might put Vista back on it later as that was quicker and now with my PC going slower I'd say Vista would be 3 times quicker.

    Download and install this program
    http://www.ccleaner.com/download/
Click on the Cleaner tab and click Run Cleaner
Click on the Issues tab and click Scan for Issues, click Fix all issues, but make a back-up when it prompts you!

Go to Tools > Start up > Disable programs you dont need/want to run on startup.

Use a cool defrag program like JKDefrag
    http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/

Make sure you dont have two anti-virus or firewalls running.

    Try this

Please download the self-extracting version of HijackThis from here:

    HijackThis_sfx download

    Save HijackThis_sfx to your desktop.

Double-click the file then click the Unzip button. Then close the Self-Extractor window.

Using My Computer/Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe to run it. If you would like to make a shortcut for your Desktop so it's more easily accessable, right click HijackThis.exe and choose Send To > Desktop (create shortcut).

Please run the extracted HijackThis.exe from now on. Delete any copies of HijackThis.zip that you have saved.

Open HijackThis and click Do a system scan and save a log file. Copy the entire contents of that log and post it here

cant see anything wrong with it. you could probably disable some start up entries, and Norton Internet Security is probably a resource hog also. Sorry dont have much advice cept CCleaner and JKdefrag..

after recent security updates, has anyone noticed that win 2000 & XP goes 'boink' on shutdown???

I've heard a lot of people are problems with IE7 crashing and MSN not working.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,757 ✭✭✭8T8

Well if you can (if it's a work PC maybe you cant) lose Symantec's Norton anti-virus and you should definitely notice an improvement as its an AV scanner that really bog's down a system.

Try Avast Home Edition as a replacement instead much better & lighter anti-virus scanner, use the custom install option to pick what types of activities are scanned to further trim it down, for example I don't bother with the network/IM/Web shield.

I'd also remove the following entries on startup
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RemoteControl] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exe"

The Yahoo Messenger could also be removed from startup unless you do actually use it a lot.

Uninstall Adobe Acrobat Reader as well as it also loads itself into the background and use free Foxit reader instead much faster PDF reader.

The biometric scanner software was that always in place ir a recent addition ?

Also press F8 at boot and enable boot logging for startup and see what it records in the Ntbtlog.txt in the root of your HD e.g C:\

I too experienced this after a microsoft update.

Then it kept crashing, system restore would crash too. I ended up wiping the system and reinstalling...... nightmare.....

I'm sure there were other ways around it, I just have the machine set up in asuch a way that setting everything up again takes no more than an hour! Probably would have taken that long to find the fix! :)

If it was something from WU you could take a look in the log and uninstall whatever was recently installed.
