I know there is an election thread already, but if we can keep the discussion restricted to local issues, I think a thread would be quite good.

First up, who's running in the various regions in the county?
I only really see the Wexford town posters and the like..

Secondly; have the people running actually done anything positive for the locality?

That's the question - have they done anything positive? John Browne, IMO, is useless, though he tops the poll every year. Some of the non-elected candidates have made a lot of noise about how wonderful they are (empty vessels?). I already pretty much know who's getting my votes.

Anybody know anything about Paul Keogh's campaign? He was around my area recently but I missed him.

Is there a list of the canidates for each region?

I presume there is but haven't had the time to go looking..

Is there a list of the canidates for each region?

What do you mean each region? The whole county is one constituency.

These are the ones I found after a quick look, think its all of them but can anyone else add?

    Fine Gael:
    Cllr. Michael W. Darcy
    Deputy Paul Kehoe TD
    Dr Liam Twomey TD

    Progressive Democrats:
    Colm O'Gorman

    Fianna Fail:
John Browne TD, Minister of State
    Sean Connick
    Lisa MacDonald

    Sinn Fein:
    John Dwyer

    Labour:
    Brendan Howlin

That's the roll call so far. However, the relatives of those lost on the Rising Sun off Wexford last November are threatening to run a candidate as part of their raise the trawler campaign.

At a guess there should be 2 fg td's assuming Kehoe and Twomey are fairly safe.
Theres always been a D'arcy vote in North wexford though the dynamics of that are diluted with all the new people moving into the area.
D'arcy is a possible bordering on a probable.

FF will have at least one this time but I think they are for the first time in my memory not guaranteed a 2nd this time.

If thats the case the shake up could be 3FG 1FF and 1Lab

OR 2FG 1FF 1Lab and 1 SF though Dwyer won't get the 2nd and 3rd preferences/transfers like the main parties would, so he'll probably miss out.
The shake up for the final seat will be tight I think but I'm going to go for my first option as the final outcome ie 3:1:1

My prediction; 2 FF (Browne and Connick), 2 FG (Kehoe and Twomey) and Howlin for Labour.

Each way wager; Dwyer (SF) instead of Twomey.

I'd be of the same opinion, though I'd like to see MacDonald in

Sadly, not a hope, she's polling lowly and doesn't seem to be gathering any momentum.

The spat with Echo newspaper editor Tom Mooney isn't helping either, surprisingly.

2FF 2FG 1LAB. I think Twoomey might struggle to win a seat he very quickly joined fg after winning his seat as independant and some people didn't like that.

I think McDonald would be a great representative for Wexford in the long run - she's extremely well regarded in FF and thus has Ministerial potential, which would be nice. Would love to see Browne go - 20 years (?) later and still feck all done!! D'Arcy would be good inthat he is young and also has that ministreial potential (if the occasion ever arises!)

My perfect ticket (political leanings aside) would be

    Howlin
    McDonald
    Connick
    Kehoe
    D'Arcy

O'Gorman is an opportunist who if elected will be elected for one reason and one reason only. Dwyer, like everyone in Sinn Fein, lives in his own little impractical, unfundable socialist world!!

I say get the new blood in for the sake of the county

    You must be joking.

Fine Gael are a long way from the days when they had candidates of the calibre of Ivan Yates and Avril Doyle (with respect to ability)

yeah and during the rainbow coalition days we had 3 government ministers in wexford and what did they do - feck all! so i wouldnt get all nostalgic about the days of yates and doyle, particularly the latter, who always seemed to be more interested in her own political gain than the good of the county.

I just think d'Arcy, if elected, and if fine gael get into power, would have more potential than Kehoe, although obviously not first time round

    Maybe set up a poll?

What do you all think Colm O'Gorman's chances? I have heard conflicting reports about his chances.

No mods here.. so I guess no poll..

I'd like to see him in, but after the Pat Kenny incident he will have a very hard time I'd say.

That was very unfair, if you're going to drag a mans family situation into the limelight, then you at least tell him beforehand.

What’s the one thing you refer to. (his homosexuality, sympathy for his abused childhood, What?)

I’ll be voting for him on the grounds he’s the PD’s only candidate for the constituency. As a right wing capitalist, I want to see them remain in government regardless of what the candidates local manifesto is or who they are in coalition with.

In terms of local matters, he mentioned one of his priorities is doing something about Wexford’s high suicidal rate when interviewed on the Late Late Show a few months back, months before the Monageer tragedy. As someone who has possibly experienced suicidal tendencies due to his abusive childhood, he could possibly be the best person to do something about it (if it is possible to do something about it).

What little respect I had for Kenny ended after that incident.
I think O'Gorman is a very good candidate on a wide range of issues and he will be getting my vote.

Does any one have any links to other polls? Just to get a flavour of how things are running?

I don't think o'gorman will get a seat but his tranfers could be crucial for the last seat.

Just FYI, Colm O'Gormon was made a senator today, to replace Senator Walsh.

I take it that precludes him from running for the Dail then..

Smart move accepting it - after the Kenny fiasco his chances of being elected were quite slim..

Minister - have you links to the any opinon polls that cover these candidates?

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,255 ✭✭✭✭The_Minister

2nd EDIT: He is still running

No it doesn't, being a senator gives you a higher profile is all. It's the usual thing to do when you want to build a candidate's chances between elections. However, making him a senator just before an election wouldn't - in my opinion - work so maybe they're looking long term with O'Gorman and are beginning to build him up for the election after this one.

i think john browne, twomey and howlin will get in because they could do well for wexford(browne could be a minister or junior minister, twomey could be health minister because he is spokeperson at mo, howlin is very high up in labour and has had many ministerial roles before) after that, fianna fail will get a second but not sure who and then id say paul kehoe for the last seat

O' Gorman's only guaranteed to be a Senator until the end of July, that's when polling is on for the next Senate.

Although, if Bertie's still Taoiseach after the elections, O' Gorman will most likely be nominated for another term.

I see his slogan 'Vote for Change'. Well far as I was aware PDs have been in power for the last 10 years and thus voting for him/them would hardly be a vote 'for change' in my book.
Also see that Dwyer fella has posters in sth Kilkenny on the approachs to New Ross. A bit much in my opinion.

Creighton (FG in Dub) had posters up for a while before the election was called...

    Anyone notice tht in Wexford?

What are the politicos up to?

Alan McGuire (former South East Radio talk show host) joined the fray last week as an independant with an unusual campaign.

He says he's "a non-candidate with a non-campaign" and won't be canvassing, leafleting or postering as he's an environmentalist. Which beats the Greens anyway!
