Just a quick Q. Would you say, in general, that a car which has passed the MOT would pass the NCT?

I'd say the most important factor would be when the car passed the MOT. The NCT are stricter on smaller items, an item like a scratch/nick on a tyre wall can cause a car to fail the NCT, whereas the same car would be issued with an advisory notice, but at the same time issued with a MOT certificate if going for an MOT. Same goes for any small cracks on the windscreen. Brroadly speaking, if the car passed the MOT for brakes, sideslip, suspension and emissions within the last month or two and was comfortably within the limits, you could reasonably expect it to pass an NCT now, all things being equal...

It is entirely up to the guys on the day testing, A car could pass the test in both the Doe & MOT and be put through the same test an hour later and fail on one or a couple of issues, take for example, the guys testing might have over looked a slight tear in a seat belt where a dog chewed it, or might not have bothered checking reversing lights or not spotted a clamp missing that secures a battery in place. Sometimes it’s just down to look on the day. I know with vans theres is certain garges down the country that are reknown to be are slacker for DOE testing than some Dublin garages
