"Tray Empty" Xbox Error

Mellow greetings,
I have a Xbox related problem. Perhaps you could lend me some advice.

Xbox (not 360) won't register that there's a disk in the drive. The message "tray empty" appears on screen. It doesn't seem to even try to read the disk (there's no 'spin up' noises)! I can't return the console as there ain't no receipt... and it has been modified softly.

Is there any way around this problem? I have tried cleaning the lens. The console was bought second hand but looks to be in great condition (clean, with no dust on fans).

the drive could just be shot, sure another second hand unit would be as chip as chips

Check out the forums on www.xboxscene.com - there's bound to be other people on there who have experienced the same problem.

Can you buy the drive separately or do you mean 'another Xbox'?

You can buy a drive for around €60 on Ebay and you can inject your old drive's key into it so that your original box will accept it.

Better than buying a new 360 anyway

Just be sure to try all other suggestions first.

Didn't know my old Xbox drive came with an injectable key.
