"Tray Empty" Xbox Error

    Mellow greetings,
I have a Xbox related problem. Perhaps you could lend me some advice.

Xbox (not 360) won't register that there's a disk in the drive. The message "tray empty" appears on screen. It doesn't seem to even try to read the disk (there's no 'spin up' noises)! I can't return the console as there ain't no receipt... and it has been modified softly. :D

Is there any way around this problem? I have tried cleaning the lens. The console was bought second hand but looks to be in great condition (clean, with no dust on fans).

    Cheers.
