Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Just curious as to what happens if one of the 3 english teams in the champions league win the competition this year, will it mean that 5th place in the league gets a place in next years CL?

No, 4 is the max any country can have. If it was a country that had 3 or less entrants, then they would get a 4th.

yeah, they changed the rule after Liverpool won it and came 5th. before then i think it was only on league positions, so they had to bend the rules for Liverpool, and put it in stone for all other years after...

Actually before that there was no actual rule, it was asumed that the top 4 got in but in reality the FA were free to choose any 4 teams they liked. Now i the same thing happens, ie say Liverpool won it and Bolton pipped them to 4th (:D ) , Liverpool would get the place and Bolton go to the Uefa cup.

But lets not have THAT thread again.:)

As already pointed out, the maximum number of sides from any country is 4.

Regardless, an extra place is only granted if the CL winner does not qualify through their domestic competition. In the case of Germany for example, if Bayern had reached the final and won, but finished outside the top 3 in Germany they'd have been entered as a 4th German team, but if they finished in the top 3 there would still only be 3 German sides entered.

Before then it was up to the national associations to decide how CL places were allocated, some countries (such as Spain) put forward the defending champions regardless of where they finished in the league (Real denied Zaragoza a CL place IIRC in similar circumstances). The PL and the FA wanted to have their cake and eat it, so UEFA allowed Liverpool in then changed the rules so that the same situation could not happen again.
