Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hey all,

Im in the middle of setting up a small business under the name of IT Solutions, but after further checking they have there own IE registered domain. I believe in order to obtain one, you must register as a company. Does this mean that I am unable (legaly) to use the name "IT Solutions" for my business?

Hoping you can clear this up. Im not to sure if this is the right forum, but I assumed since it was slightly legal discussion it might be!

    Cheers!

Nope. You can register any business name with CRO. A business name is just a declaration that "I am conducting business as this name, but I retain full liability".

I think once you get into registering a Limited company, then the rules change.

Well I dont know much about business registration at the moment, its been a long time since I studied that! Does that mean a company can be registered in several forms?

The company with the name and domain name of IT Solutions is a "Limited Company" I assume as it calls itself "IT Solutions Ltd". Does that make any difference?

    Thanks.

whoa..whoa whoa...which/what is it you want. Do you want to

    a) set up a business called IT Solutions - a sole trader (effectively) with that name over the door
    b) set up a company called IT Solutions Ltd
    c) register a website called 'itsolutions.ie'

if you go to the CRO website, and do a search, you'll see that, funnily enough, you're not the first to want this name...

    GT

edit - what IS strange...cos i just did a whois search, is that - like you say - IT solutions have the domain, but i see no sign of them existing on the CRO search...dunno can you mentino this to the people who divvy out the domain names...

Im just looking to setup a business called IT Solutions which a few people will run. We will be looking for a domain name for this also, which I believes requires to be registered as a company!

but pardon me ignorance...if www.itsolutions.ie is gone already, what exactly are you looking for...

From this http://www.whois.ie/QuickGuideToRegistrations.php it would seem that if you furnish a 'Registered Business Name Number' to them, you're sorted. NO NEED for setting up a company...it's a ten minute job, in other words...just fill this in and send 'em a few bob...€40

    http://www.cro.ie/_uploads/downloads/rbn1fill.pdf

as i say, if the domain is gone though....

    Was considering just registering;
    itsolutionswd.ie (It Solutions Waterford)

    Even it-solutions.ie is taken.

Can I just get a confirmation.. am I able to register IT Solutions as a business name and then register for a .ie domain name (wont be the same as the business name, it will be "wd" at the end) without any complications or legal issues as there are people already with the name IT Solutions..

    Just a bit confused.

    Cheers

A domain name is a completely separate, and non-legal issue. The Irish Times website is www.ireland.com but they don't trade that name. Contact the relevant authority (I think it is UCD) and ask them what they think.

I'm not going to give you advice on the second issue. Contact a solicitor or the cro.

Yes you should be able to. Though you may want to register both "IT Solutions Waterford" and "itsolutionswd.ie" as business names (yes, you can do this too).

The IEDR rules allow you to register an address once you have registered a business name. Check out www.iedr.ie for the rules. This is not a legal matter. If another company has a dispute with you registering that domain name, the IEDR won't act on it. It's a matter for a different international regulatory body.

A solicitors firm (in Dublin I think), has spent the last few months registering addresses like nike.ie and adidas.ie (though perhaps not exactly these ones), all perfectly legit and within the IEDR's rules. Presumably they're attempting to test/set precedent within the law.
