Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Problem playing back Xvid content in Vista...

So I'm having a big problem playing back Xvid content in Vista, by this i basically mean any .avi file I've gotten since I got my new laptop.

The files won't play in WMP or Winamp. In VLC, the sound plays and the video just shows a full screen of colour that changes as the video plays. The files do play in media player classic, but obviously i'd rather i could play them in my main media players.

In order to play the files I have downloaded a codec pack from here (no luck though), then here (again no change). I then tried downloading manually the latest version of ffdshow and then Xvid. And again no change.

Does anyone know what else I can do to try and get this content to play? I have identified the codec being used with Gspot and it says that the codec is Xvid and the name is Xvid 1.1.2 Final and it confirms Codecs are installed...

Uninstall all codecs packs, XviD & ffdshow and only install ffdshow tryout.

Second if you haven't install the display drivers for your GPU don't use the stock drivers built into Vista if your not sure what make is it ?

Thanks for the response, but alas the same problem is still there.

Using the windows install/uninstall, I uninstalled ffdshow, xvid and the vista codec pack. I then installed the ffdshow beta link you sent me and installed it with the default options. the clips still do not play in winamp, wmp or vlc... It really is very strange...

Thanks for the response, 8T8. I did a Direct X diagnostic, which I've included below, it includes all the necessary information on the codecs and card that is installed...

An NVIDIA Quadro FX 350M is present the regular NVIDIA drivers for Vista wont work on those so you have to use modded drivers.

The bad news is that laptopvideo2Go is offline so you cant get the latest drivers for Vista which are the 158.18 so you will have to make do with the earlier 101.41 drivers.

Download these & run it will extract to a folder like NVIDIA\101.41 but wont install because GPU is not supported now download this INF and place in driver folder overriding current file then run setup.exe in the same folder.

Once the driver installs reboot and try videos after that.

This appears to have somewhat sorted the problem, or at least it's halfway there now. I againt tried the same file which was encoded with XVID (according to GSpot: version 1.2 SMP), and it is now playing fine in Winamp, but still nothing in WMP or VLC which I find strange, it's getting there. Would I be right in saying that the undated drivers from laptopvideo2Go may be of some use to me when they come back online? And genuinely, thanks so much for the help so far, it's been great.

edit: And this is a strange request but is there any way to keep ffdshow from having icons (it currently has two) in my taskbar? I know it could be stopped by preventing it from starting up as a process but then this may hinder it's performance when playing back content. it currently shows "ffdshow audio decoder" and "ffdshow video decoder"

for the VLC problem you have to change the video output module for it to work.
had same problem myself and found the solution somewhere on the net.
anyways in prefs goto video-output modules then turh on advanced and change it to directx video output. that should get VLC working.

It's more than just VLC that's affected it's part graphics driver as that it what renders Vista desktop including videos.

Yes the 158.18 might make a difference as the earlier NVIDIA drivers where not very good and quite buggy.

For the ffdshow icons all they are just systray icons they dont affect playback in anyway, they are quick links to the properties of ffdhow.

To remove the icons go into ffdshow config in video & audio config go to "Tray dialog & paths" then untick the show tray icon.

Also in the video config try this go down to output and tick the box for "High Quality YV12 to RGB Conversion" and try videos again.

Install Haali Media Splitter as well leave all the settings as is during the install.

Now download this MP4 video and try playing it back in MPC, VLC and Windows Media player just force open it in WMP and ignore the message about playback. The video is encoded in MPEG-4 ASP the same type as XviD though uses a different container so I'm curious to know if something is wrong with the AVI splitter.

Finally is it only XviD in AVI that is affected all other videos types are okay ?

Jut to update in addition to what I posted above laptopvideo2go is now partially back on line.

This is the modded 158.18 INF for Vista 32-bit.

This is the 158.18 32-bit driver for Vista, uninstall the old driver prior to installing the new one, same deal as before with dropping in the INF.

This didn't change anything, it still won't play in WMP and causes it to become non-responsive (as before)... VLC still just shows up a black screen, though does play the audio.

I will try the other steps now, let's hope we get this sorted! I tested another AVI file in WMP which was encoded in DVSD (dvc/dv video) from an apple quicktime export, and it played fine. Also the sample WMV3 clips that came on the computer still play. I haven't been able to test any more formats just yet as I don't think i have any Divx content (any links to a 5 second sample?), but so far its only been Xvid...

edit: *ignore initial comment, i need to concentrate more!*

not to be a fool, but what's the cleanest way to uninstall the driver, i usually just throw it on on top of the old one, but that isn't really the best way.

Thanks so much for all this 8T8, it's great to have someone taking an interest and working to resolve a problem.

Also, Windows automatic updates just inadvertantly updated my display driver and now has me with this (this is before I run the 158 driver update...)

    Display Devices
Card name: NVIDIA Quadro FX 350M (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM)
    Manufacturer: NVIDIA
    Chip type: Quadro FX 350M
    DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC
    Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_01DC&SUBSYS_01C81028&REV_A1
    Display Memory: 518 MB
    Dedicated Memory: 246 MB
    Shared Memory: 271 MB
    Current Mode: 1680 x 1050 (32 bit) (60Hz)
    Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor
    Driver Name: nvd3dum.dll,nvapi.dll
    Driver Version: 7.15.0010.9746 (English)
    DDI Version: 9Ex
    Driver Attributes: Final Retail
    Driver Date/Size: 12/8/2006 04:25:00, 3061352 bytes
    WHQL Logo'd: Yes
    WHQL Date Stamp:
    Device Identifier: {D7B71E3E-429C-11CF-8A55-C22101C2CA35}
    Vendor ID: 0x10DE
    Device ID: 0x01DC
    SubSys ID: 0x01C81028
    Revision ID: 0x00A1
    Revision ID: 0x00A1

So from this I presume i should still be upgrading and/or running the Haali Media Splitter? Considering the clips still dont play I would think so?

Damn me and my hastiness. I went and uninstalled the driver in the way i figured i should. Rightclick on desktop > display settings > advanced settings > adapter type > properties > uninstall.

Anyway, now neither of the two downloaded driver update thingys work, even with the new INF file. It just says that "The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit." Does this mean I uninstalled the driver wrong?

Did you forget to copy the 158.18 INF into the 158.18 folder and run the setup.exe ?

Just do that and that should install the driver.

Install Halli Media Splitter and open the MP4 I linked to in MPC or VLC and see if it plays.

Try some of these XviD in AVI samples as well to see if they play.

Hey 8T8, now that I have a clear head I can work out what the problem is, basically the newINF file I downloaded just has the generic server message in it, so obviously when I downloaded it, it was offline and yet I managed to grab something. I have the other parts of the installation all ready to go, and so now that the INF file is back online and I have saved a copy, it's just a case of me waiting till I'm home this evening to see if it can be installed OK. Fingers crossed.

I had managed to roll back my driver though, so at least I don't have a nasty 800x600 display anymore.

Aha yeah their server is still a little weird and not totally back up.

    Anyway just to recap everything
    Install new driver
    Install Haali Media Splitter
    Test XviD & MP4 samples

One other item ffdshow video decoder properties & go into codec section then for XviD, DivX and other MPEG4 set them all to disabled & close the window. Now go back in again and set them all to libavcodec and try videos after that.

Excellent stuff, the new driver didn't make any difference, but when I installed the Haali Media Splitter it finally allowed WMP, VLC & Winamp to play back the Xvid and DivX avi files! The mp4 one plays back fine in VLC but isn't playing back in Quicktime or Winamp (winamp it only plays audio, and quicktime it plays back blurry and pixelated (the typical codec problem kind of look when frames blend into each other), but I'm not too worried about that as mp4s are pretty rare.

The only issue that remained (and I have solved it but will leave it here in case anyone else faces it in future) is that ffdshow was putting an overlay onscreen readout on each video about the audio tracks, it's in green and is just like

    Audio track:
    Input description: 48000Hz, stereo 127kbps mp3 (libmad)
    Current input bitrate: 160kbps
    Audio track:
Input description: 48000Hz, stereo pcm (uncompressed)
    Current input bitrate: 0kbps
    Audio track:
Input description: 48000Hz, stereo pcm (uncompressed)
    Current input bitrate: 0kbps

It was just a case of double-clicking the tray icon to load ffdshow audio config and deselecting "OSD".

QuickTime and Winamp have very poor MPEG-4 standard video support despite their marketing it is the players themselves are the cause as to why they wont play.

Typically you have to encode MPEG-4 ASP or AVC/H.264 material to a certain manner for them to play in those players, QuickTime doesn't even support MPEG-4 ASP of which XviD in an implementation it only supports the lower MPEG-4 SP standard.

Anyway after all that good to hear it's sorted it sound like something deactivated or messed up the AVI splitter in Windows as a splitters function is to parse the video container and hand the stream off to the video/audio decoder. Haali is such a splitter is that developed for MP4, MKV and AVI containers and MPEG-TS as well.

Mp4 had always played fairly well for me in quicktime before, so it is indeed curious. I'm not going to bother trying to get them working as I rarely get mpeg 4 files anyway, and the fact VLC plays them is fine for me.

Anyway, thanks once again for the help in getting everything sorted for me, it was much appreciated,
