I'm pretty sure a lot of it's simply PR. They hold dinners on board afaik.

They pay pretty hefty charges, and what's wrong with them anyway?

You'll be able to tell if they're invading: they won't be at Mangans.

Another huge French battleship is docked in the City tonight.
Anyone know what purpose the French Navy have for docking here?

If i'm not mistaken there was two Belgian battleships docked about a month or two ago...
They're courtesy visits. There's no particular reason behind them.

Cork has docks. Ships dock at docks. It's simply not feasable for all the ships in the world to keep going around and around in circles forever. Sometimes, they need to stop. And, as Cork harbour is the headquarters of the Irish Naval Service, it's as good a place as any.
Also, it's handy from a PR perspective. One of the Irish naval fleet went off on a trip down to South America a few years back. Same deal.

There are a number of reasons for foreign navy ships to call.
Firstly, replenishment/restock, and r&r for the crew.
They hold civic receptions, inviting politicians, business people and ex-pats.
They'll meet and greet members of the Irish Defence forces.
Occasionally they help out too - a couple of years ago a Danish ship was berthed at Custom House quay. The night watch spotted a drunk falling into the river on Penrose Quay, they got the rescue boat into the water and saved the guy.

Irish ships have travelled to many foreign ports - North and South America, the Baltic, the Middle East and even to the Far East.
