Firewall for Linux

    Hi there,
In Windows I use a two way firewall (think that is the term) - Sygate Personal Firewall- which basically allows me to select which programs have access to the internet. I get a popup asking me to either allow or deny a request from a program to access the internet.

I was wondering if there is something on Linux which does the same thing reliably?

I think iptables is a fairly common one. I'm sure there's a gui for it too.

Edit: http://www.fwbuilder.org/archives/cat_downloads.html this might be useful

Yeah I forgot to put it in the 1st post- I would expect this to be a gui for iptables. I will have a look at your link tho.

If you use kde you could try this one:

    http://kmyfirewall.sourceforge.net/

I'm actually having a problem with Iptables at the moment. It doesn't recognise DROP or REJECT, I can't find where in the kernel to select them. I'm using 2.6.19-r5, gentoo sources, if that makes any difference.

    Shorewall is awesome. http://www.shorewall.net/

To be honest, you don't really need much firewalling in Linux, its more than hard enough for your aveage user. I ran for well over a year with no problem before I even realised I didn't have a firewall!

As Cremo said Firestarter is a good choice, I use it here on Ubuntu and works a treat, easy to use and configure.
