Anyone come across dirty tricks trying find houses for the summer.? We were just about to send 5000 via western union the other day only to figure out "our" had been rented to 2 other groups already just by chance. This is san diego btw...

Not trying to insult your intelligence, but why would you consider sending such a large amount, especially via western union? I'd be very wary of any place looking for anything more than a deposit in the low hundreds of euro, even at that you could still be conned. Was the e5000 for a few months rent or just a deposit?

In fairness, alot of landlords will request you pay a full months rent and a security deposit up front. For a 3 bed apartment this could be in the $4000-5000 range. We had to send about 2000 Canadian to our landlords in Vancouver last summer.

I guess you just have to 'feel it out'' for yourself in order to decide whether its kosher or not. Its the risk you take I guess if you want to have your accommodation sorted before you head over. It did feel like a massive relief last summer to know we were arriving straight to a furnished house.
