Just watching Bertie on the new saying that FF have the interests of first time buyers in mind.

Why then did they abolish the first time buyers grant four and a half years ago and do nothing to replace it or compensate for it?

    Bloody ridiculous !!!!

Actually they massively increased mortgage tax relief for first time buyers and plan to do the same again when reelected to government.

Neither did the damage the property market by speculating on getting rid of stamp duty, unlike FG who said they would but wouldn't say when! Now that is bloody ridculous

And they have just removed the stamp duty for first time buyers - and did nothing for the investors(ie non first time buyers) unlike what all the rest of the parties want to do (ie improve things for everyone inc investors).

As opposed to FF who will remove stamp duty for ALL first time buyers irrespective of what they earn. Where's the fairness in that?
Why should any party go out of their way to help property investors? Its first time buyers on the average industrial wage who need the help, not investors. WOW help the investors..... <ahem> "speculators". God of almighty.....

I'm sorry, but I still think that getting rid of stamp duty only helps the sellers get more or the FTBs money. Property prices will just increase in a short time. I wish they would just leave it as it is and stop messing with property. Just free up more land, or build decent high rise homes- with good sound proofing and balcony gardens with green areas for kids to play.

The FF scheme with no threshold is just creating another tax avoidance method for their rich buddies. The Labour/ FG proposal at least has a threshold for zero stamp duty.

No doubt Stamp Duty reform will lead to an increase in house prices, but a factor that has been overlooked by most commentators is the fact that at least if it is on the house price people can put it in their mortgage. As opposed to now where it can't be, and is usually paid with (often hidden) short term loans which frankly make a mockery of the stress testing for new buyers.

You hit the nail on the head, it's only a last ditch attempt by FF to buy some extra votes. FF have never had the interests of FTB's in mind, there only interest in FTB was to fleece as much stamp duty as possible from them and to benefit their property developer buddies in the Galway Races tent.

What's bloody ridiculous is Brain Cowen saying he won't change stamp duty because it will put the property market at risk and then a week later u-turning and wahey.... the change in stamp duty for FTB's!

Also the FF hack spin is getting quite ridiculous too isn't it skearon
