Fireplace Tiling

We got an old fireplace in our sitting room tiled. The guy did a good job, but i only noticed yesterday that at the sides he tiled 2 different designs as seen in the not to scale drawing. Before i call him anybody have any ideas as to why he may have done it this way??

is the front tiled?
Maybe thats just how it worked out
