While the election campaign will properly see discussion of major transport issues and the balance between motorways rails etc, these measures are expensive and take time. There are also many simpler less expensive things that could done.

    Some suggestions

Signposting. Standards will be drawn up for what should be signposted and for the positioning of signs etc. Signs will be of a size that can be read by anyone with the eyesight level required for a driving licence travelling at the speed limit for the road in question. A 3 year plan should signpost the State.

Road signs and markings. A complete review of standards for road signage and road markings with a new manual after year 1. An inventory of all signage to be taken and conformance with the (revised) manual after year 2.

A comprehensive overhaul of learner driver regulations. No more unaccompanied driving for any new licence issued. New format 'L' plates, which can be detected electronically, and fines for displaying these on a vehicle not being driven by a learner driver. Rules of road tests for everyone renewing driving licences.

High priority to linking the points system with the North and other countries to ensure equal enforcement.

Licenced bus operators to be required to indicate clearly the times of their services on bus stops and by sms etc with a requirement for a fare discount if buses do not show up somewhere near the time.
