Our car keys went missing or were taking yesterday and we aint got no spare! Do we need to get on to mazda direct or can any garage look after it?

Do all the locks etc need to be replaced or can they cut another key? we need to check the docs to see if we have a key number.

    Presume its a costly exercise?

Depends on the year of the car.

Most cars for the last 10 years or so have a factory fitted immobiliser. They key has a built in transponder which sends a signal to the immobiliser to disarm when you place the key in the ignition. This allows the car to start.

You may have to go to a Mazda dealer who will order a new key, this key will then have to be reprogrammed to match your car's immobiliser code. They should be able to do this with the car's chassis or registration number.

I'm not sure how much Mazda will charge for this but it could cost up to €200.

More than likely it has a factory fitted immobiliser then. Might be worth posting on a MX-5 owner's forum for advice before going to a Mazda dealer for the key.

The alarm problem depends on whether it is a Mazda alarm or an after market job.
