Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Holding two mobile phones together

A little birdie once told me that its possible to fry an egg with the radiation released from 2 mobile phones that are connected to eachother (by call) held beside eachother.
What you get when that happens is a whole lot of feedback but is it true that the radiation is this strong?

Do mobile phones emit harmfull radiation? What exactly do they emit? They do emit something. Not paranoid just curious.

Sternn - are you sure you shouldn't spell your name Steorn? :p
No, you can't cook eggs with mobile phones. Mobile phones emit microwave radiation at 1.8GHz which does have small heating effects with water, same as microwaves do. But, to even receive a minutely measurable raise in temperature you need to be on your phone at least 45 minutes a day. From reseach conducted a few years back (when I last looked into it), to even consider possible damage you'd need to be using for at least an hour a day, every day. And this was before they restricted the SAR of phones, a lot of research has gone into reducing the amount of radio waves blocked by your head because it reduces concerns and improves reception :)

You could fry an egg with enough Wifi cards though, I'd say :)

Curious again: are there any stats on mobile phone masts on this issue? People live right next to them. And from what has been said about the emission exposure at 45 mins a day?
How would that effect a house or family living right next to a mast emitting 24 7?

distance is the big difference there. while a mast does radiate a lot more energy than a phone the big worry with phones was that your holding them against your head. not allowing the energy to be ambiantly absorbed.

personally i'd be more worried about sleeping on an electric blanket

As mentioned above the radiation emitted from phones (and phone masts - it exactly the same kind) is microwave radiation. This radiation has a wavelength of approx 10 cm. This essentially means that it will usually deposit its radiation within a few centimetres. This is why your head\ear can heat up slightly when using a mobile. This also means that most radiation emitted by masts is also dissapated over a short distance. (However due to the higher amounts of radiation emitted it means there is a greater probability that some radiation will get a longer distance).

So essentially masts aren't that harmful unless you have one coming out of your roof. But mobiles do deposit there energy\radiation into that few cms around your ear. However so far it has only proved to be no more harmful than putting something warm next to your ear. But keep in mind that the worse the reception the more power the phone is using in an attempt to get a signal thus the more energy deposited in the area around your ear. So basically more masts = better reception = less radiation going into your head = less chance of any slight (so far unproven and unseen) detremental effects building up

mobile phones put out 2 Watts tops, and that for the big ones and when you are in a bad signal area. in normal use they would use a lot less power for longer battery life. Microwave would use 100's of times more power.

Microwave ovens are tuned to near an optimal water adbsorption frequency. Mobile phones use lower frequencies that are less energetic and not as well adsorbed by the egg.
