if your friend is on call shouldn't he/she not be in a pub in the first place? How important is it to socialise? :D

I was thinking the exact same thing, though I must admit I know plenty of people who do the same. I feel like a bit of a git for having the urge to point out that "on call" does not necessarily mean "we'll pay you for doing whatever you normally do in your free time"...

I'll disagree with you there Fysh. By all means do what you would normally do within your spare time, as long as you are able to recover within the timeframe expected of you. Generally, this means you can go for a swim, you can take a shower, and you can go to the pub as long as you're not drinking. I've worked in places where the response time for on-call is 4 hours. I don't know where Balmed_out's friend works, but chances are he's just showing an extra bit of consideration by finding a place with wi-fi to allow him to respond quicker and save himself a trip home to dial up in case its just something small.

Ah I know, it depends on the job. I'm just cynical as I know some folks who genuinely do have "on call" jobs like you describe, and others who just treat their jobs as if they were "on call" but are more a case of "I'm supposed to be there and I'm not so I'm just trying to not get caught". (I knew one fella working security on a building site on weekends who was frequently not at work for about half the weekend, but would basically call out at the start and end of his shift for the shift change, and then have his phone on in case the boss phoned to say he was on his way out to the site....)
