The non-game of the season. Unless you like the idea of Terry and Lamps squirming as they form a guard of honour as the Mancs get thier gong.

    Mike.

Both fielding 2nd string teams. Pointless guard of honour so.

Thought Jose might field 11 youth players or something to take the piss.:)

i was hoping it would kick off a bit when Mikel got all agitated, but Terry had to go and calm him down.

Smith in midfield probably United's best player, says a lot. Dong looks pretty crap, not much of an outlet for the midfielders. Some nice bits of passing here and there, particularly united working out of defense, but apart from that, nothing. still, it beats getting up off my arse and forcing myself to study :D

Sinclair looks pretty good prospect at times, started off pretty bright. got past Lee pretty easy at one stage, only for Smith to come flying in.

yeah, they are appalling at times.

it wasn't the worst 0 - 0 draw, but still... such a disappointment after all the hype that had been going on about this fixture since Christmas. pity.

i was really really hoping we were gonna see a scrap though. :( best bits were the United fans chants at the Chelsea's.

Shockingly bad game, but by god, I deeply enjoyed it :)
Terry clapping on Lee, Dong, Richardson, The Pole was very funny :)

United reserves, like complete reserves, no first choice players there, drew with Chelsea's half and half team, so that was very enjoyable :)

Furthermore, Chelsea's team for the final will be quite similar.
If you put Joe Cole on from the start, put Cole in at LB, put Cech back in, and put Lampard in, and you've got their team.

Not the best game ever. Thought Brown was outstanding though, made some fantastic clearing headers especially seeing as Kuszszak seems to have a fear of
catching crosses!! As for the young guns, meh, eagles was alright I suppose.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,857 ✭✭✭✭Dave!

    Worst. Match. Ever.

    Dong is a useless sh*te.

I thought Eagles played quite well... Must have wanted to impress the manager! He was running all night and threw in some hard tackles too (including a Scholesy-esque tackle which he got booked for!)

Overall atrocious game. 7 bookings, by the way. Graham Poll was taking no crap today.

Gotta feel for Scott Sinclair alright, he definitely looks like a good prospect for the future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

I can't say I was that impressed with him when he was on, sad to see him get injured.

To be honest, I thought the ref was ****. I thought United were denied a penalty for Essien on Eagles. Furthermore, if it wasn't a foul, it had to be a dive, yet he didn't book Eagles for it. Why? Bad reffing.

Apparently we are gona put out a full team against West Ham, who thinks Fergie wants revenge for 95 :)

I dont see how anyone could possibly think it was a peno. It was so clearly a dive it is unfunny, even if there had been contact on his left knee (which there wasnt) he was already on his way down at that stage. Theres fresh air between essien and his knee.

The "if it wasnt a foul it was a dive arguement" , while technically is right, wouldnt work in practice to book every player every time theres a penalty/free appeal turned down. Thered be multiple players sent off in evrey game, it's just not workable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

I only saw it twice in the bar, but I thought there was contact. Will have to look at it again.

The "if it wasnt a foul it was a dive arguement" , while technically is right, wouldnt work in practice to book every player every time theres a penalty/free appeal turned down. Thered be multiple players sent off in evrey game, it's just not workable.

That's not true. It's not the case in all cases where it must be either a peno or a dive, for example, a defender making a taclke from behind if he gets the ball, he's taking the defender with him. However, not all tackles lead to this, and a tackle can get the ball without subsequently taking down a player.
But in cases where the ref decides he doesn't get the ball, and then has to decide if he gets the player, the only situation is either a dive or a peno. That's why I think the ref bottled it. He wasn't sure, so he decided on neither, so he wouldn't be noticed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,424 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

i was watching the replay of the 'peno' incidentm and i am still not sure. From one angle it looks like a dive, from th other angle (behind the run) it looks like Essien made contact with Eagles' left leg. However, i'm not sure, even after seeing replays (but would be more inclined to think it was a dive) so I think Poll made the correct decision.

Dull game, It wasn't a pen (no contact) though it did look like one when it happened. Brown had a good game at CB but He wan't up against top drawer strikers. I wasn't impressed with Kuszack or Dong, Eagles and lee were ok.

I expect a different Game on Sunday, United will be at full strength which is only fair to the teams in the relegation battle.

Remove your Scouse specs, Essien clearly lunged at Eagles and got no where near the ball and clashed knees with Eagles. The commentators even said it was a penalty last night. If I can find a link to the video I will post it up for you.

Uh no. Sky showed another angle which showed there was no contact at all. You need to remove your blinkers.

they showed two close up shots of the incident, and discussed both, They said from one angle it looked like a dive, but from the other angle it looked like there was contact.

there is another angle, from the opposite side of the pitch, from which it looks like there is no contact.

meh.... from Polls angle it looked like a dive.

meh.... from Polls angle it looked like a dive.
I would disagree with that - Polls angle would have been looking at Eagles, so he would not have been able to see if there actually was contact; to see that he would have needed to be standing across from the insident, on the far side of the pitch (the angle of the TV shot i refer to earlier)

I believe Poll made the correct decision in not awarding the penalty, but i simply don't agree that from his angle it would have looked like a dive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

I think there was minor contact, but Eagles was looking for it, so I don't think it should have been awarded. He fell independtly of Essiens tackle.

That said, Poll should have booked him for diving. Those were his two choices in that situation.

Probably the only testimonial game you are going to see in the premiership this season :D

Chelsea team clapping out Utd's reserve team...major lol !

In fairness they were well organised last night and they got the draw they obviously came for....maybe we should have sent that team over for the 2nd leg of the Milan game !!!

Did we actually pay money for Kzuscak ?? PLEASE tell me he is on loan....with the exception of a penalty save in the Arsenal home game he has done nothing else but look shaky in any game he has played, the peno save didnt even matter as we lost anyway!

Bin him and get the Foster lad on the bench next season.

    http://www.footytube.com/2007/05/09/chelsea-0-0-man-united/

second clip, 3:53 in, you can see essien makes no contact at all

so a dive. Not maybe a penalty, not perhaps, a blatant dive lads

I was very worried that Lee would get hammered last night, but he impressed me a lot - made some very good tacles on both Sinclair and Kalou, and didn't look bad at all imo. A very good performance from him. I thought Smith did an ok job in midfield again, providing a bit of help to the defence when needed.
Kzuscak is on loan, til this summer, but we have already agreed to buy him.

Hopefully he doesn't get a look in next season, cause he is crap. I think Foster will be no. 1 by the end of the season.

I thought Brown was fantastic last night, better then i have seen him in a long time.

i think your prices for Makalele and Mikel are a couple of million too hight. Also, DONG (must always be in capitals.... ) cost a lot more the 500,000 and i think there were nominal fees for both eagles and richardson. Plus, over the course of a season i would expect that chelsea side to pick up a lot more points then the United one; which would probably have less shots on goal in a season then chelsea did last night!

eh? didn't you just kind of prove my point there? Poll was looking at Eagles i.e. Poll couldn't have been able to see the contact (if there was any, which is doubtful) as it was the other side of him, and just saw Eagles flop on the ground. Players were in the way, he couldn't really have seen Essien's lunge in full and would have just seen Eagles making a meal of it, hence it would have looked like a dive.

    Eh, no.

Just because you don't see contact, does not mean it would have to be a dive. Poll couldn't have seen any contact because there were players in the way. Poll could also not have seen there was no contact because there were players in the way. Poll would only have seen Eagles go to ground; his only decision was then whether he was 100% sure a foul had been commited; if he is not 100% sure, he should not give a penalty and he didn't.

Just going off soccerbase.com, but Makelele and Essien's prices don't seem that high.
Dong cost .5 million, with a potential for 3.5 based on appearances, of which aren't gona happen :)

Mikel fee is also off PHB. Its potential fee rather than real fee you've put in so if your doing the real fee for a united player at least keep it consistent for Chelsea as well.

in a couple of months, he will have cost 16million. From memory, the deal was 4million to Lyn last summer, 6 million to United last summer, and another 6 million to United this summer.
