Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Outdoor antenna?

I have two houses next to each other... there's a 10 foot hedge separating them. House1 has a wireless router. When I'm in house2, I am able to connect to house1 with a 5dbi antenna from Maplin - but only when I stick it out the window (it seems the outer wall in house2 blocks the connection).

I would like to implement a reliable long term solution, which will function without packet loss even on a windy day when the hedge needs to be trimmed. I'm thinking it might be worth mounting a small outdoor antenna ~8dbi? to the chimney of house2, looking over the top of the hedge into the wireless network of house1.

Do you think this is overkill? If not then could you recommend a small outdoor antenna that would fit the bill?

Cat5 might do it... I'll measure the distance. Problem is there are a couple of cement paths I'd have to go through which makes it awkward.

forget 5dbi, go with the highest dbi directional attenna you can buy, point it exactly at the router an go for a router and receiving card both with mimo you should be laughing dont worry about the hedge!

    Don't do that, it's insane  :D

I guess you have already tried moving around the routers upstairs/beside windows etc.

If you can mount one of these out the window from one of the routers it should do the job.

Alternatively, for chimney mount you could try this (but then you will also need cable, pigtail etc.)

Just buy a Linksys router from PCWORLD for example if you are in a rush, 119 euro, this is 802.11N and this is certainly the best for the price, huge range and speed (Really fast, and compatible with G cards).

I use it over 50m away from my house, behind other houses, still got 3+ bars.
In my house it works anywhere perfectly.
