For this calender year the Dr D'Arcy Show is down 25,000 listeners

they are probably off training for something or other

Ray down to 218,000, not panic stations yet however if he continues to creep closer to 200,000 they will have to start looking at what they are doing. I am a fan of the show however it is getting to the stage that Nike will want to start sponsoring the show if he continues to talk obsessively about marathons, 5Ks etc

Thought he was slightly thrilled to some guy nearly died on his race. Going as far as interviewing the people who helped.

What if he had died, would Raymond have the undertaker, priest and gravediggers on.

I've tried Newstalk and 2FM as alternatives in the morning but just cant warm to them. I still listen to bits and pieces but most days find myself listening to spotify or podcasts to fill the hole when Ray jumps on his soapbox, puts on his Asics gels, gets out his cookbook or opens up the family album.

All the time so. Stopped listening to him and the alternatives are poor but not to have him preaching and pontificating to people every interview means I'm getting less annoyed each day.

For argument's sake, say Ray gets the boot tomorrow. Who would you bring in to replace him?

Anton. With Mairead and Will. Jenny in the odd time too.

I know a lot here find him bland, but I'm a fan of his.

Seriously though, 25k is ~>10% of their audience. That's gotta be ringing alarm bells. If they don't do something to freshen it up, they'll continue to slide IMO. The show hasn't had an original idea in a few years now, just recycles the old over and over - Fix It Friday, running, cancer, running, the same roster of comedians, same stories every year for Christmas, pancake Tuesday.

The first thing I'd change if t'were me would be obliterating that whinge-fest out of the 9'o'clock news. Or at the very least have Will and Mairead giving opinions too. It's just so dull.

Anton is class. And Mairead and Will seem to get a really good laugh off him when he's filling in for Ray.

The last time I listened to D'Arcy was the start of his show one morning where he talked about rumors of Marty Morrisey replacing Marty Whelan on Winning Streak (or the summer version of it)

He said a new Marty would replace an old Marty and laughed his little heart out at this brilliant joke. I switched off and haven't been back since

So I have been switching between Tubridy, Pat Kenny and local radio ever since.

Please get rid. Because I'd like to have another alternative. A new show. Which means getting rid of Miread and Jenny too because they're part of the whole problem

Today FM should be trying to get a top comedian interested in a morning slot - and using Rays holiday time to try out new names instead of bringing in Anton all the time because I don't think he's the answer. But not Neil Delamere again. PJ Gallagher or Dermot Whelan for example maybe. With the right co-presenters, someone like that could work very well.

But have no doubt, Today FM will let it slip another good bit before they make a change - even though they shouldn't.

While I am on a rant, they need to get rid of Tony Fenton too....and maybe D'Arcy would be suitable for that slot going forward.

it's a DJ they need not a comedian....there are no comedians on this planet capable of coming up with material 3 hrs a day 5 days a week.....look at 2fm!!

It's not about the material. It's not like he'd be doing a stand-up routine for 15 hours a week, It's about the personality...which D'Arcy has none of.

I like Anton, but I'd wary of falling into the 'What's rare is wonderful' trap. Tom Dunne was always excellent when filling in for Ray, but then he found it difficult when given a permanent morning slot on NT.

    Jason Byrne - nice one!!!

It has just been waaaaaaaay too long since he has been on the show.

    The unfunny effer.

His remit was different then, his show was a current affairs/topical one with a small bit of music fitted in, he'd work well if it was the other way around.

I don't think there are any obvious candidates to replace Ray, those who have filled in for him in the past have been fine but would not make good long term replacements in my view. Maybe bringing in some new presenter that no one has heard of could be an option although a risky one.

Agree with this. And I don't think they'd ever appoint someone who nobody knows to the most critical timeslot of their schedule. New names will always be bunked into a 10pm to 1am sort of timeslot first.

In any case, D'Arcy and Dempsey are still the only non RTÉ shows in the top 20....and it'll be a couple of years at least before Today FM would dare shake that particular tree too much.

Rays contract is up at the end of this year and his listenership is going the wrong direction so maybe we might see some sort of change. He still has a huge audience though so it's doubtful he'll be moved.

I think what killed Tom Dunne originally on Newstalk was having Joe Donnelly as producer.

I will sponsor d'arcy to stop talking about marathons for 10 mins.

I've moved the dial. I can't take the 'm' word anymore. Driving along today, roaring 'shut the **** up'. Not good to be that stressed when driving!

    Welcome aboard, Raymond.

    What did he apologise for?

  • Registered Users Posts: 979 ✭✭✭Michael Weston

Why did he have to apologise?

  • Registered Users Posts: 875 ✭✭✭JohnFalstaff

Why did he have to apologise?

The apology was for a piece concerning Motor Neuron Disease. Ray D'Arcy read out an apology to a Dr Orla Hardiman and then read out a long statement that Dr Hardiman had written concerning various treatment methods used by patients suffering from MND.

I didn't hear the original piece that was being referred to so I can't say why D'Arcy was forced to apologise.

He moved straight onto the papers once he finished reading the statement and didn't comment on the matter again. It was all a bit strange!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,179 ✭✭✭mountain

He had to apologise to a specialist involved in treating MND, over an interview he did with a sufferer and comments that he made that day.

Im sure it was one of those ill prepared interviews where he just spoke without having done any research.

Well over a half hour on pubic hair now, every pay cheque he gets must be considered a bonus.
