Howdy, I have an athlon 64 bit 3400 and 1.5 gigs of ram. Would I notice a big difference if upgraded to an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.0GHz and a 2 gigs of ram? I use the pc for music production.

That is a pretty top of the range single core chip you have there, but still pales in comparison to what dual or even quad core can do.

I would go conroe personally and clock the brains out of it with good air cooling. In answer to your question though..yes you would see a big difference with that chip imo

Dual core would be better route, in regards the RAM how memory intensive are the programs ?

If they eat RAM for breakfast like I've heard some music production software does though no direct experience myself then getting a 64-bit Windows OS with 4GB of RAM might be a good idea.

Of course before doing any of that you need to be sure any hardware is supported with 64-bit drivers as I understand some specialist music equipment has Windows drivers but they may be 32-bit only.

You'll have to replace the RAM either way as Athlon 64 X2's and Core 2 Duo's both use DDR-2 ram your current system has DDR which is not compatible.
