Bloody hell. Is there ever gonna be an ending to this long, often bad-tempered and borderline interesting thread?

I obviously have to think of a more devious plan to get this thread off topic...

inequality- how is it unequal? I go to a grinds school and dont think im any better off for this exam than i was last year in my ''normal school''. plenty of people go to grinds schools and get 100points! the only ones youll hear about are the 600pointers!! not unequal at all. You just havent experienced a grinds school so peoples imagination conjures it up to be a magical land, thats all. ok maybe it is great. haha!
If you're no better off then why are you paying thousands to be in a grinds school?

And to throw this question out there, is a broad education at leavng cert level a good thing? Or would a earlier specialisation be ideal, or at least be possible. When replying bear in mind the fun people have in laughing at those doing arts degrees!:D ;)
No, 15/16 is too young to choose to specialise IMO. Also, why laugh at those who do arts degrees, I know I don't. I might come across as a bit arrogant regarding the Leaving Cert, but I certainly would not mock someone's choice of college course. So what if someone at 18 is not ready yet to choose to specialise in something?
    Assez Bien wrote:
Our L.C. is way 2 broad n varied i mean you may only use 3 out of ur 7 subjects in college, i'v known people to use none!! I also believe our college system is a disgrace compared to even the U.k, the points system is turning people away from 3rd level education
You don't understand the value of a broad education do you? Secondary school is about broad education, picking up any knowledge you can and developing your personality. College is for specialising.

And more people are going to university than ever in Ireland AFAIK, so I'm gonna call bollocks on your assertion that the points system is turning people away from 3rd level education.
    OctavarIan wrote:
...? Bollocks? Wow you've won the arguement right there. Are you seriously trying to compare text-based learning with face-to-face learning? rolling on floor laughing
The internet isn't like a book. The text is personal responses. You can ask people questions and they'll answer you personally. It's not very far away from someone teaching you face to face at all.

Back to grinds. I dunno what's being argued right now. However, back to the point OctavarIan was ROFLing at me about: Face to face teaching versus online learning(asking questions on forums, asking internet friends over IM etc.), are they comparable?

IMO they are and online learning should be promoted as a free alternative to grinds, revision books etc.

My main argument against grinds is more the money spent than anything else.

    Discuss.

Well, when I did my leaving cert 3 years ago, my maths grind helped me no end. I couldn't make head nor tails of the textbooks. He explained the stuff, to me in a way I understood, and I got a C in honours, which I was pretty happy about.

I went to the institute over christmas and easter, and it was useless. Cram 200 kids into one classroom, throw notes at you, and expect you to understand it.

I never said it was like a book. I said it was text-based learning. Which is true, because the only method of communication is text. It's pretty far away from teaching someone face to face. It's like comparing e-sex to the real thing, I know which I'd choose anyway

I've nothing against this at all.

Grinds which work with classes yes, but one on one grinds are well worth the money spent imo. (so long as you truly need them)

LOL, I had the exact same experience of the place when I went there for a few classes over Christmas.

Money spinner, playing on students insecurities.

At the end of the day even a bad teacher will be able to explain a concept you don't understand if you ask, and you have to do the same amount of study, grinds or no grinds.

Surely a person will only need grinds if they have a bad teacher in the first place? I never got grinds but I half regretted it in the end. At the time I was very apathetic about the LC, but if you are chasing something above 420 points and aren't sure about some topics then you will probably benefit from grinds.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭JC 2K3

In retrospect I probably was a bit narrow minded writing that.

My argument is essentially that in a lot of cases, even if grinds did help someone, they probably could have achieved the same amount on their own with a little more hard work and saved themselves the money.

I agree to an extent, but people react differently to the whole study situation, some need that extra guidance, some can push themselves while others need a push. I think that grinds are perhaps overused, and the first thing that is tried if someone is struggling, but I think they have a very important place for many people, especially if as I suggested they are aiming to get into the top few percent of LC results in the country.

No, its your ignorance that I find amusing.

@Darren101: You cite that the leaving cert being used in Libya, is evidence for it being the standard barer of second level educational standards in the world?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,564 ✭✭✭Naikon

Not including the fact that A-levels and similar exams are taken in many countries around the world.
So much for the LC's "International recognition".

Most European countries use the Baccaulareate as their examination also. The leaving cert is far, far from perfect. The grinds culture merely serves to highlight the great inequalities in the system.
