Most European countries use the Baccaulareate as their examination also. The leaving cert is far, far from perfect. The grinds culture merely serves to highlight the great inequalities in the system.

and the laziness of Irish students

not that all grinds are pointless... but lbh it's a pretty high percentage right?

Well take the sheer fecking cost of it!

Say for example an 'average' student,
    2 grinds a week @ €25 each for a year
    1 Revision course @ €300
    5 Revision books @ €10 each

I think thats the guts of €1200..... So much for free education....

EDIT: Its actually hovering around €2000

What the hell? The government pays for your education (up to a certain extent) so it is mostly free. Listing privately run optional education sources and then complaining that they're not free is pretty stupid.

No, its your ignorance that I find amusing.

cson im not ignorant. i think you're merely jealous of grinds and grinds schools, and me, and the fact that with 3 weeks to go, youre probably screwed or something. dont take it out on cyberspace!!geez man.

Have a read of my post again.

    Did your grinds cost money?
    Do revision books/courses cost money?
Does the leaving cert exam itself cost money?
do your school books cost money?
    Do your copies cost money?
Do your pens and all cost money?

Now, am I stupid for saying "so much for free education"?

You're exactly the kind of person I was talking about in my first post on this thread.

No one has to take grinds, get revision books, or do revision courses - and if you think complaining about the cost of pens/copies and textbooks is a valid argument - then lol.

    The Great Gatsby
'before you ever criticise someone remember that not everyone in this world has had the same privileges as you have...'

    Bono
    'The difference between myself and yourself(to reporter) in terms of wealth is miniscule compared to the difference between us and people starving in africa;

No I am not trying to compare Bono to F. Scott Fotzgerald. In fact i hate Bono.lol:D

But complaining about how much education costs seems petty in the light of the above. Education is a privilege that many do not get to have. And the bono comment- well how big is the difference between someone who can afford to the institute and someone who cannot. Notes will still not magically enter your mind, and if the statistic above is true, it is in fact a hindrance.
Just remeber 'there is no act, no fate that can circumvent the will of the determined mind';)

P.S Unless your dead, but then you don't have to sit the leaving so forget about it.lol:D

Of course! :p I don't see what point you're trying to make here. You want all these things for free?

Yeah I know, but all the same I'm sure a hell of a lot of LC students take grinds they don't have to. I just put a figure on it, if you took grinds in 2 subjects once a week for the duration of the year, throw in a revision course, a few revision books....well it all adds up for a start and would give you a distinct advantage over someone who doesn't take grinds etc.

This thread is getting off track a bit. Who cares if they take grinds when they don't have to? They're the ones wasting money not you. Most likely they'll flop in college anyway because in college you have to do everything yourself.

I don't remember reading that, and after looking through the thread I cannot find it. Please direct us to the original post, or if you are making it up, you are being ridiculously petty to try and prove a point.

Okay now I am shocked that you said that honestly. Firstly you have no idea whether or not you will get a better leaving then anyone. This obviously explains the attitude of people towards grinds on the threads.

God Dan, I'd never have taken you for one of those whiny humanitarian "remember the starving children" type people.

(Also please never quote Bono again or I will come find you)

I agree it is. But you cannot bring leaving results into this. We have not even sat the exams.

It might be a personal choice in the context of rich students, but those who can't afford grinds cannot choose to do grinds.
