    Hi Folks,

I was wondering if people knew where I might find out if there is a towpath or right of way for sections of the grand canal?

I think there is a right of way all along going back to the day when the horses had to pull the boats along before they were given engines. Many sections are in good order but in rural areas have become overgrown. There is a new bikeway on Dublin City section I think starting at Leeson St Bridge.

It should be possible to walk all along the Grand Canal - an email to Waterways Ireland
or the Inland Waterway Association would confirm this

This FAQ covers cycling and walking on towpaths..

I cycled the Grand canal two years ago from Maynooth to the Shannon. It's a mixture of really bad field and gravel. I only had to leave the tow path once for about .5k if I remember.

The Grand Canal doesn't go anywhere near Maynooth. Wrong canal.

If I had a Mod hat and was wearing it, I'd be typing in bold and telling you to use the Report Post button :P
