how did you find the pharmaceutics? Which question did you leave out?

It's the first exam I've really been panicked about the night before to the extent of losing sleep over it. I was lucky enough with what came up, but was a bit annoyed that they dropped Deasy's question, was going to answer that one!

I left out question 3, the very broad one, worried I'd end up waffling for a few pages and lose focus. I think my lack of English essay writing skills would have dragged that answer right down had I done it.

    How about yourself?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 561 ✭✭✭paperclip

I left out the second one, mostly because I felt that they would consider it 'easy' and so mark it harder. Question 3 really was broad, wasn't it? It was scary!
Also very annoyed that Deasy's didn't come up. I was all ready to waffle on about glass! I didn't like the first question though...dear Lord, do I hate the gamma symbol now.

How's the bio studying going for ye? What do you think will come up in chem? (Don't just say 'organic reactions')

EDIT: Having thought about it, Q3 probably was Deasy's and he felt like seeing something a bit different. Reading answers about packaging and labelling probably gets monotonous after a few years...

can you stop mentioning that? it freaks the **** out of me! i still cant believe its all over in a few weeks!

I'm really doing it to remind myself to do more work!
but yeah, 4a3(1) today was just peachy...so long as he gives attempt marks.

Was very happy with the Rapid Gravity Filter question as well as the Air Pollution. Could have done better with the Sludge one, but I forgot how to do part of it. Still, a good exam.

    What options are you doing?

    im doing:

    structures 2 (like everyone).
    materials (like most people).
design and the built environment (like lots of ppl)

and 4a6(3) advanced theory of structures, which is not as fun as it sounds.

tinetable isnt bad, right now im just freaking out about soils which i just..dont..get.....

It's the stuff that the ground is made up of. Soft, spongy particulate matter. Oh, mention quicksand! That stuff is fun.

Nope, not when it comes to geotechnical engineering.

I'm avoiding study with a healthy combination of newstalk for the elections, the internet for the elections, and a bit of poker.

I really should do some work.

Is it that new building, or is it goldsmith hall, or what?

  • Think its the second floor of the Luce Hall.

Paper 5 (general paper) on monday....

This is where they ask you mind-fuck questions along the lines of:

-"a monkey jumps out of a tree at the same time you shoot an arrow at it..."

    or

-"Jeremy and paul are standing on a slippery frozen lake, holding either end of a rope, there's a pot of gold between them..."

or how about one that's stumped me for the moment:

-"a ball drops from 3 metres, every time it bounces it is restored to 0.9 its previous height. How long will it take the ball to come to rest? What distance will it have travelled?"
That's all the info given in that question. Anyone wanna try it?

The average mark most years for this paper bobs very little around 42%
I am not looking forward to it.

Jeremy and Paul will agree to split the pot between them, as well all know that a risk averse person will reject a fair gamble in favour of certainty.

However paul gets shot by an arrow that was aimed at a monkey and jeremy finds a ball that has come to rest.

    sucks to be paul

"a ball drops from 3 metres, every time it bounces it is restored to 0.9 its previous height. How long will it take the ball to come to rest? What distance will it have travelled?"

Answer in terms of bounces, perhaps? :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

erm, slightly too sleepy to calculate the number of bounces (which if you'd surely need the weight of the ball to calculate its acceleration to the ground etc.) but by that question it will have travelled 0 metres.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

Unless you count its up and down movement as the distance..

setting a limit of .5mm (a guess of the deformation of the ball), then using logs I got 82 bounces. Didn't help in the slightest unfortunately. Unless I want to spend 20 minutes adding with a calculator.

acceleration due to gravity is independent of weight. Drop a feather and a steel ball (in a vacuum) at the same time and they'll hit the ground together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

True. my second answer still holds though. unless you take slant equal to the general slant of the earth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

Okay but you sure you don't mean 3 metres so?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

Actually apologies - Pet would be right. The distance travelled would be the distance up and down essentially aye?

    blah, spleepy.

I'll show you some of my questions and see if you get them!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 561 ✭✭✭paperclip

Say 'AYE' if you're sick of studying!

Yep, definitely. Am still only 'starting' really.

    it bounces for ever and covers 19m: 2X(1+.9+.9^2+.9^3+ . . .)-1=2/(1-.9)-1

Hmm cheers. I hate series but I see where you got that. Except why do you have a -1 in there?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 77 ✭✭notjim

dropped from the top so it only does the first distance once, all the others it does twice, up and down.

Why does it bounce forever? Do you not count gravity?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 561 ✭✭✭paperclip

Ok, I'm in panic mode. Help calm me down! Chem tomorrow morning and I am officially screwed.

  • Just go to bed early. I tried to stay up cramming for an exam last week and it went unbelievably badly cos I was so stressed and exhausted. This is of course unless you haven't studied at all in which case an all nighter is unfortunately necessary.

    paperclip wrote:

Because the way the question is phrased it will always do 0.9 its previous height which will go down to stupidly insignificant amounts (i.e. 0.9 of 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
    00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001m)

I don't think it's meant to be taken as a very realistic situation :)

well, I've studied throughout the year but well, it's just not my best subject. I don't think I have a brain for figures. Unless they're naked, then I paint them.

    QUESTION:

I have to answer 5 out of a possible 8 questions tomorrow. Is it better to do 5 and do them more intensely or answer all 8 on a less intense level?

Sorry; it was dropped from three meters so
    3X2X(1+.9+.9^2+.9^3+..)-3=6/(1-.9)-3=57
    ie always read the question.

Meh.. I find if I know the stuff I'll really focus on say three out of four options as I can then give really good answers..

However, if I don't know the stuff I'll just skim so I will be able to answer the required two out of four. This is only a good idea though, if there is a lot material that can be asked per question and thus good, indepth knowledge is required.
If the material per q is pretty focused the your best bet is prob to study the five.

Went better than I thought it would. Anyone else do Chem Principles & Properties 1 this morning? Paper 2 tomorrow, but I like MCQs. They jog the oul memory. My thinking is if you don't know it, you don't know it. If you know it a little bit, having the answer on the page reminds you.

Only 2 more exams and then I'm heading home for a few days to study for the final 2.

    I finish next friday! :D:cool:

Wow, today's was horrifying. It was 100% harder than last year's paper and the year before.
I think I'm going to need a lot of chocolate to get over it. What did you think, balzar?

We had the same thing yesterday, comparatively a lot more difficult overall than any previous year. But for finals, so a bit more at stake. A lot of people were quite upset. So a few of the class got together and emailed the school head (who's away) expressing some concerns. Got a reply today telling us: "the examiners will consider your comment that the paper was unusually difficult."

    You got it.

I USED to think I was good at chemistry. Meh. There were tons of questions on Grayson's lectures (chemistry for health sci ones) and the exact ones I hoped wouldn't come up, did.
    Darn it.

Quite a few of ours were like that.. they deviated quite a bit from the previous few papers.
