Anyone have a good site to book a return transfer from JFK airport into manhattan

Take the AirTrain and the Subway. It'll only cost you $7.50 or something and very easy.

Hey, just wondering if anyone can recommend anything to do in New York? I've been five times already so I have done the empire state, statue of liberty, central park, 5th avenue etc. This time I want to do something slightly different. I'm over 21 if that matters!

The natural history m useum is supposed to be good, you could do one of the tv show tours (sopranos, sex and the city etc), a trip to atlantic city

Hi hoping to go to NYC for 4 nights at the end if November, where is the best place to go to book flights, hotels etc? Any recommendations? We were hoping to spend approx €800 each on fligths and hotel but stay somewhere pretty central and clean. Would this be possible?

    Hi all,

Ive spent an hour going through this thread and cant see anything that fits what Im looking for.

My mum and I have booked flights for August 10th-19th and we are wondering about suitable clothes/shoes to bring as although it will probably be hot and humid the shops should be AC'd and dont wnat to be going from hot to cold body temperatures?

We will be staying in Yonkers with Mums brother so if anyone has travel advice from there into the city would be great.

My biggest worry at the moment is getting to see most of the attractions. I know we have 10 days at worst taking jet lag into account but Mum has walking troubles. So if anyone knows any tips that would be great without having to take taxis everywhere!

In addition, do New york take a break on weekends especially Sundays or can we expect everything to be pretty much open?

Thinking about tickets for The Lion King but the tickets on our price range are in the back two rows in mezzanine. Doe anyone know if the view is crap from here? If so not really worth the money. Plus I dont expect to queue at Times Square for hours to try and get a discounted ticket

was thinking the following so far
    - Walk the Brooklyn Bridge
    - Spend time in Central Park
    - Staten Island Ferry

i dont mind spending money on somethings (ive been to nyc before) but just thinking of fun things to do that are low cost in the beautiful apple!

    Hey guys,

My girlfriend and I will be in Manhattan for one night on Wednesday as we're going to a show on the upper east side. Can anyone recommend any decent cheap hotels around that area? We've had a quick look online but none really matched our criteria.

    Thanks.

I stayed in the Holiday Inn Express just off Time Square in January. It was cheap and cheerful, but I had a nice room on the 25th floor with a nice view, and it was about 120 bucks per night. For the price and location I give it 4 out of 5. There was a good concierge there too with lots of information about what to do and where to go.

Guys am looking for some recommendations for a 5 night stay in New York. Looking for somewhere budget enough with a decent location. Anyone come across any legend spots/little finds. Have been recommended the Gershwin but have no idea?

Stayed there, hated it on arrival but it grows in you very quickly. It has a real charm about it, super location and there's an awesome diner around the corner called Burger Best.

Moving this to be merged with the NY megathreadp

Hi, this is my first post but I've been reading through this thread for a while and it's very helpful.

I'm going to NY with my girlfriend for 10 nights from July 29th. We booked the flights but not the hotel yet. We want to stay as central as possible as neither of us have been to the US before but the hotels seem very expensive. Our budget is around €1300 for the hotel.

Anyone know somewhere nice and central for around that price for 10 nights?

Also, I was wondering if we left it until the last minute, could we get much better deals?

    Thanks

    Kevin

    Hi guys,
Have been reading through this thread and found some great gems.

    Just 2 questions:
    1. Which city tour is best -The open top bus with gray line tours
or the fully comp manhattan tour with escourt in covered bus.
    2. Woodbury Common- Is there much there for someone with the fuller figure say Europe size 16-18

    Thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 535 ✭✭✭bob50

Ok when i visit NYC i nearly always stay in the Pennsylvania ( must be at least the 11th floor or above) as the rooms are better there If they put you in a room in the lower floors tell them you want a higher floor

Its on 7th ave right across from madison square gardens and penn train /subway station extremley central

should just come in on your budget

Remember that hotel rooms in NY are like dog boxes and very expensive

The rooms we have in our hotels are like palaces compared to Ny

    Enjoy your hol

Thanks for the info bob, much appreciated. My sister actually stayed at the pennsylvania a few years ago and she has advised against it. She said the walls were damp, the room too warm and the staff very unfriendly. Obviuosly that might just have been her experience.

Also, hotwire seems to have great deals for NY hotels. Would people recommend this? They don't give the name of the hotel but there's a list of hotels they have on betterbidding.com so you can almost guess what hotel it is.

I used Hotwire last year and it was great. We used it the day before we left New York for Boston to book a hotel. The longer you leave it the better the price. We got a very well known Boston hotel at a great price.

Thanks bobblehead. Ya they seem to have some great deals for quality hotels - we're going for 10 nights and we could save over €300 for a 3.5 star hotel for example.

The prices seem to constantly change though. Do you think it's always the case that the prices go down closer to the date? Even at peak time at start of August?

We went to Boston at the start of August and the prices went down.

Hi, just wanted to inform ye that we decided to book with hotwire for the ten nights from July 29th and we got a 3 star hotel in chelsea - very central - for €1410 with breakfast included.

It turned out to be the Holiday Inn Express Madison Square Garden which we had guessed it was from betterbidding.com. We're delighted with it as it would have cost us almost €1700 had we booked that hotel elsewhere.

Has anyone stayed there? Anyway, I would definitely reccommend hotwire to book with - there's great savings there.

is woodbury common the best outlet center to go to or are there better out there? i believe that NJ doesnt have the sales tax on clothes that Connecticut (Woodbury Common) have so any outlet centers there would be cheaper. does anyone know of any good ones??

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,340 ✭✭✭borderlinemeath

Jersey Gardens is the outlet mall in NJ, cheaper to get to as well, but it doesn't have the high end designer brands of Woodbury common, more high st and lower end designer (ie Tommy Hilfiger, Guess) so it depends on what you want.

It's quite an old centre and the decor is very dated. (unless they've done it up in the past 18months)

As has been said, Jersey Gardens. Jersey Gardens is just like a normal shopping mall with Tommy Hilfiger, American Eagle, Old Navy etc. but no sales tax on clothes.

Woodbury Common is a designer outlet that sells last season's lines. It's better for guess, coach etc and designer goods. I'd suggest getting a directory of both stores and seeing which one appeals much.

One tip - if you're going to Woodbury Common, get a locker as soon as you get there if you are intending to buy a lot, you will be thankful at the end of the day!!
