One thing's for sure, Bertie aint bashful, as he had to get the last word in by saying 'Go raibh maith agat' to Miriam. Fly fecker but we knew that already ;)

    Bertie in The Sopranos?

    I can see it now.

At least we know now that Bertie can keep a secret after all those years!
Him being the finance minister without a bank acc. & not leaving a paper trail, now that's crafty & cunning he'll go a long way :D

Compared to Enda he's too innocent looking & wouldnt be able to keep a secret! :o

RTE were absolutely correct in not giving the viewers the choice of The Sopranos over The Debate. RTE decided it was more important that we watch The Debate, and that was that.

I'd like to see them take this idea a little further. How about eliminating any programming choice at all on the viewer's part - it's clear RTE knows best. And I wonder can they fix it so we can't turn the televisions off, just the volume down? Maybe we could replace the Angelas with a Two Minutes Hate too.

Its not like watching those gobsh1tes makes a difference anyway. Its just a popularity contest based on personalities, does anyone believe anything these fellas say? Do you really think they will carry out the policies they say? This is nothing more than a vanity contest tonight. At least we would have been entertained with the sopranos. I fvcking despise RTE WITH EVERY OUNCE OF MY BODY.

Does someone tie you to a chair and force you to watch RTÉ One or Two every night?!! You have a choice - they're called other television stations, or maybe not watching television at all!!

Good God, it's only a week. Other people would be giving out if they had a big hitter like the sopranos up against the debate..

RTÉ just issued a release saying that almost a million people watched the debate last night, so I reckon it was a good move on their part. It was purely public service and that's what they are there for afterall..

Ive been watching it for the 8 odd years its been on now, and Im nearly sure this is at least the 2nd or even 3rd false start to a season that we have had. Anyone else recall it before?

Have to say, I wasnt hugely impressed by the last series (then again, watching the repeats on Channel 6 again it didnt really get going until season 2 imo)

For all their faults, RTÉ were right in their decision. Supposing RTÉ did show The Sopranos last night. There still would have been uproar. People would have complained that two heavyweight programmes were shown side by side. They would have likened it to Dublin Bus - you wait ages for something and then two come at once. 950,000 people watched the debate last night. I would assume that a considerable chunk of those would have been torn between the two RTÉ channels had Tony been on.

I may very well be wrong here, but I gather that The Sopranos has a young-ish audience. There would have been criticism from people who believe that the government is alienating the young electorate that now RTÉ have followed suit.

It's only seven more days. Granted, this debate should have been scheduled much earlier and then this could have been taken into account. That's the only fault I see RTÉ having here, and even so that may have been outside their control.

    Finally... someone talks sense!

    That is very true.

Nevertheless, RTE have advertised the season premieres in the preceeding weeks and days. It wouldn't take Mystic Meg to foresee that PrimeTime would be the venue for the TV debate, so it just smacks of bad planning on their part. And if they did feel they had to limit competition against the debate, they could have done so in a matter more agreeable to their audience. Instead they spring it on the audience at the 11th hour, and shunt it to a week later. It's either a case that RTE can't see past their own nose, or they simply don't care.

Not wanting to distract the youth audience doesn't hold water either - I mean they replaced it with Road Trip!

11th hour? One would think they told viewers five minutes before it was due to air.

Well considering it was moved after an ad campaign promoting the original air date, is that really far off?
