Overclocking, huh?

I'm building a PC - it's taken some time (and an SSIA) to get the cash together but I have it now :D I've ordered an ASUS Striker Extreme motherboard (cause I'm a pervert :p) and there's a 8800GTX sitting in the house waiting to go into it. I was thinking of getting an E6700 - by the sounds of it it's not a big deal to make that go faster. I need to decide on RAM and a few other bits. The RAM thing confuses me slightly. The spec listing of the motherboard says it'll got to DDR2-6400 (800Mhz). Now, this is an overclocker's board and I want to do some overclocking :) Does the process allow me to make use of other faster RAM or do I buy 6400 and work with that?

Thanks in advance guys and girls.

That board takes higher ram anyway! Ive the ASUS P5N32-E SLI board with pc-8500 ram and 6600 @ 3.2Ghz...

So you can unlink the 2 and overclock whichever one you like.. I wasnt sure how it worked with ram and overclocking so I bought good ram so theres no need to overclock it :P

Im positive the Striker has got the same function!

    Hope that helps :)

Nope, id stay away from the crucial. Not because its a bad ram. ITs because its poor value for money. And will not be anywhere near as good as this team xtreme 2gb kit for 100£. Though you will have to buy it today as stock is dwindeling big time. Also if you plan to run vista i would seriously consider getting 4gb of ram. If its just xp or mce you are going to use as a primary os or even some linux distro like fiesty fawn (ubuntu) stick with 2gb.

Or failing that and you want something a bit more high end, with a bit of the auwld bling bling you can always go for the new Ocz ram:

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-089-OC&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=817

While you are at it you need to consider a Psu too. Since i know your outline spec you wont need anything too much, around 600W will more then do you. Seasonic are known to make the most reliable and efficient psu's on the market. And their multi award winning S12 line up are fantastic. This is the 600W modular version:

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-006-SS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=589

Now you have your Motherboard, graphics card, ram and a power supply. You need a sound card. I'm guessing you like your music, so onboard sound really isnt a option at this stage. So a creative X-fi. The version i have picked is the cheapest available, but there is no point going for the uber ghey Jonathan "Fatal1ty" Wendell version. The Xram makes no difference to sound quality and fps. You are just paying for his ugly mug on the packaging, and his little emblum on the card. Wooooo....

You have also been toying with the idea of dual or quad core. Honestly you will not really see a difference in poerformance from a E6600 to a Q6600 in real terms. Where you will see the difference is in multi threaded applications. But they are few and far bwetween. So, unless you want to play a game while ripping a dvd while encoding another while at the same time as doing a virus scan i would stick with the cheaper E6600. But if you want to future proof it that little bit extra get the Q6600.

Now ofcourse all of this goodness has to go into a case, and why stick it in some ugly beige box when you can have something much more appealing to the eye. And ofcourse with all that high end hardware, you will need to keep it cool. So i was thinking the new antex p-190. Yes that not a typo, p-190:

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-072-AN&tool=3

It may bot appeal to everyone, but it certainly will cool everything you have, and it being a antec and a follow on to the p-180 it is gonna have amazing build quality, and fantastic air circulation.

Dont forget the pics when you get this beast up and running ;)

Hey, Anti, did you notice that your choice of case (the Antec) has not one but _two_ power supplies already installed??? (A 650W and a 550W).

On the subject of DDR2 RAM, it's getting cheap. I got this stuff:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144062

...for 80 euro plus about 15 shipping (all told), and it's bloody great :D Apparently they've got these Micron D9G chips that some overclocking types are getting excited about (don't know the whole story)...

Yeah, Geil RAM seems to get a lot of good buzz over at the OCUK forums, good for overclocking.

I did indeed. The 650W will be enough for his system, the extra psu becomes handy for upgrades in the furure.
