Are there any serious reasons NOT to choose an auto gearbox? (After the driving test of course).

Could you give me any links on previous debates?

To clarify: I am not trying to make anyone switch to the auto! I''m only concerned with my own choice.

Unfortunately the search function is next to useless at the moment, so it's difficult to search for threads, but just scroll back through the list of threads a month or so. There was one quite recently if I remember correctly.

    1. If you buy one auto you will probably never drive stick again. They become additive.

    2. Autos more expensive (initial outlay from new) and when they do give trouble in later life, it tends to be much more costly to repair. They also tend to need more specialist attention if and when things go wrong - something most franchised dealers mechanics (or technicians, by their terminology), tend to be out of their depth. On some older "less prestige" cars, potential bills are often more than the car is worth. Read scrappage time!

    3. You could do your test in one, but your license would be limited to driving autos only.

i changed from manual to an auto a few weeks ago.. its great... harder on fuel but worth it.. its great for pulling out on junctions, as it takes off nice and fast, and also quicker take off from the lights... i find that i drive a bit slower and more relaxed as im not working the gears!

one question... my car is brand new... how many thousand km should the break pads last before they need to be changed...?
my car is 155bhp and is very pokey.....

do auto boxes give any bother at all? i do find that if i coast, the car doesent loose the same amount of speed that a manual car would..

so i find im reading the road traffic conditions futher ahead, to plan for stopping... so im not using the breaks too much,..

regarding the auto box.. one tip in the manual was to keep your foot on the break and apply hand break before putting car into park... this takes some stress off the park action of the gearbox ....

overall the auto box is the business......so enjoyable to drive....

it is a pity that there is such a poor range of auto cars with diesel engines in mainstream manufacturers.......( toyota/honda etc)
