this picture I saw before is from the Bastnas yard in Sweden as they are a few closed yards that dont have the equivalent of the EPA emptying them. The cars are just left to rust in their surroundings, hence the tree growth over the years. There is an awful lot of cars, buses, lorries etc there........

Do you think it might turn into a Merc W115 if it was left long enough?

    Hi Capri.
Do you think that W??? could be bought?

W108 !! ;) S'pose everything has a price - that 108's been there years AFAICR so MAYBE he's 'going to restore it someday' :P or MAYBE he'd let it go for (under 1k ?)

I'd do my homework on UK prices for similar machines v's CLEAN W108's on Classic car sales uk
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mercedes-Benz_300SEL-W108_Rear-view.JPG
    - there was a W108 300SEL 4.5 in Dundrum for sale recently

, that machine was running etc so would the Ranelagh one be a time/money pit that would keep you off the streets only for you to be defeated and sell it again v's buying a road ready classic that MIGHT let you down once or twice for a few days????

(My opinion is based on 40years of buying 'classics' / 'money pits' and 'quick turnaround' cars - now I prefer the ODD repair job on a machine that's running everyday rather than the (valuable) time consuming 'project'
The less I have to fork out to the Govt and Insurance co's in this BaNAMA republic the better :D)

    Its not a W115 !!

That Ranalagh W108 is not for sale, apparently - it’s a ‘gonna car’ (“I’m gonna do it up someday”)

  • Registered Users Posts: 52 ✭✭new2sat

Apologies,I'm new to this. W108 & W115 look similar, its the front lights I'm trying to go by, but I see the difference now, the chrome surround goes to a slight point on the W108.

I respect & appreciate your advice as I have zero exp of classics, but really admire the people that drive & look after old cars.
Someday I'll have a little treat for myself! ;):)

Re W108, talked to local Merc head today - had approached W108 owner re selling. Flat "NO ! " was the answer

    Here's a cheapish way to 'treat' yourself - http://www.classiccarhireworld.com/contentok.php?id=766
Rent a classic in it's proper enviroment, where it's been maintained using correct parts etc. - the first time I went to LA I rented a Camaro to cruise Mulholland / Sunset / Hollywood etc -

    livin the dream:cool:

Problem in this part of the world these days is too many 'rules' and charges, when I had my classics I could drive on foreign plates here, pretend the tax was 'in the post' etc and off I went - now the cops just seize the car if your light is out and it's revenue fines all the way :eek:

A few bits and bobs I saw whilst cruising around today, all just awaiting restoration (hopefully).

Sorry for the poor quality of some which I had to take with my phone through chain link fences.
