had a closer look at the Ford this morning.

    REG is ZF 4331

    Says Customline V8 on dash

Well beyond saving, but engine block looks ok, as does steering wheel and dash, dials etc, some trim ok. Rear bumper solid and could be rechromed, boot ok some minot rust. Rear glass is perfect, drivers window and drivers side passenger window ok, as are quarterlights.

Its a real pity nothing can be done for this old lady. Maybe the parts mentioned will help someone else.

Has anyone ever tried to recover some old vehicles like this in the past?
I know that in the UK there is a group that use 4x4 and recover old burnt out motors from field and forest and such as they spoil the country side.
Could and should something like this be done here?
This V8 would be an example, it could be recovered, goodish psrts removed and the rest recycled properly.

    might work

at least then it can be scrapped properly and not rot into the ground.

    Nice recovery though, well done

There'd be a good few hot-rodders interested in some of the parts off this I reckon. Glass, lenses steering wheel I'm sure quite a few bits could be restored and/or are usable now.Part it out and put it on flea bay.

That Kadett's been there for a while... I saw it there a few months ago.
Half tempted myself. Would make a nice cheap to run daily driver. Original LI plates too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,269 ✭✭✭MercMad

Those Kadett D's were good solid cars, good survivors too. The Vauxhalls weren't as good and rusted out in no time.

The 1.2 OHV engines lasted forever but the OHC ones were far nicer to drive, raspy too.

    I had a red 1980 1.3 reg 310 HZJ, cracking car, miles better than 87 1.2Kadett E I replaced it with.

Okay heres the story. The guys name is Brendan, have a phone number for him.Very nice chap. We were the 6th person to ask about the car, but the first person who wanted to restore it, all others wanted to grass track the car. 80K miles from new, one owner(who passed away and thats how it is were it is now)

But...... He will not sell it. No way.

Hes a semi retired Ford mechanic, has a garage in the town and a few more old cars.

I'll keep in touch, you never know.

I would hazard a guess at: The sorry remains of a military truck or another. Military spec tyres and 4WD would point that way.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

The smiths clocks would point to something british perhaps, and the six cylinder engine has an air of an austin unit about it?

    Austin K5 perhaps?

    http://www.armour-models.co.uk/images/Soverign/s2kv012.jpg

It'd account for the chassis tapering to the rear

I remember speaking to a guy about 15 years ago who claimed he had a Jensen FF in need of restoration in storage in the Monkstown area, anyone ever hear tell of it?

That J9 looks like a late model as they were built till 1993. I liked it cos it had sliding doors, sort of like the BMC J4. I found an earlier one in the Tarn
region in a barn, was used to transport manequins in Paris in the early 60s.

DS Break - wow, this one looks very restoreable. Arent there some places in France where you could find between 90-100 of these cars in one place?

I'm only guessing but it looks like it has a split tailgate - the horizontal plate would be vertical and visible from behind with the lower section dropped?
