    Hi Guys,
I’m thinking of getting a centrefire rifle.
I want to use it for fox hunting and the odd competition. I’ve been giving serious thought to the .204 Ruger as a calibre choice.
Has anybody tried the .204 on a fox, is it an expensive round?
    Rifles I’ve been looking at:
CZ 527 Varmint Kevlar (my favourite at the moment)
    http://www.cz-usa.com/product_detail.php?id=13
    Remington Model 700 SPS Varmint
    And as I’m a leftie:
    Savage Model 12FLV Left-hand Model
Savage Model 12 Varminter Low Profile Left Hand
Anybody got any of these or any suggestions?
I’ll need a rifle with a fairly high comb as I’m going to mount a 56mm objective 60 power scope.
    Cheers,
    Slug Chucker

Had the caliber for 6 months.
From my experince, found it, expensive, inaccurate and not 100% on foxes.
Changed to a .223 and have not looked back since.
Its cheap, accurate and more then enough for fox.;)

Message understood, I was looking at .223 and .308 as the second choices so I'll just bump the .223 to the front or the caliber list.
.223 was the best on price for ammo which would allow for more practice time on the range.
What was the .204 working out per round?
Do you know of any .223's that come with the barrel pre threaded?
    Cheers,
    Slug

    Tikka tactical

.204 is supposed to be a wonder calibre but i havent heard many hunters rating it well.

.223 or a .222 if you super doesnt like mil cals

Or either side is the hornet or 250

Had a look around on the web, not much choice out there for a leftie.
I think it's going to have to be the remington 700 VSF in left hand. Only comes in desert tan though:(
Anything can be bought to work on the remington to improve it and as I'll need a custom scope rail so it'll have to do. It's a bit outside the budget at €1200-€1300.

Changed my mind, Savage 10FLP in .223 bought today. Got great reviews and can shoot apparently.
I've set my credit card on stun and went shopping later:
Bought an ASE Ultra Jet .223 suppressor so she has a date with a lathe when she arrives!
Bought the Choate varmint stock for it also.
Custom matched base and mounts ordered from Ken Farrell in the US due to the scope I'm putting on it (it's a monster 12-60X power benchrest scope, 65mm objective!)
I will have to wait a few weeks for the rifle though as it s in the UK :(
All the bits won't arrive in until then anyway.
Should end up looking something like this but in a leftie version when I'm finished:

Any opinions on a good .223 foxing round?
What's the best distance to zero the rifle at to maintain point blank, 200-250yards?
I'll only have 100 yards to zero it at so how many inches high 2” or 3”?
    Cheers,
    Slug

Federal American Eagle, 50 gr hallow points are cheap and very effective for fox.
Zero 1 inch high, at a 100yds., This will take you out to 220yds.

    The best of luck.

I was looking at the ballistics for American Eagle, what hold over at 100 yards should I use to achieve the best point blank average to 300 yards.
My rifle range is only 100 yards so I'll need to zero there first.
This is the from their website for the 50 JHP:
    BULLET TRAJECTORY
    50 100 200 300
    -0.3 0 -2.7 -11.1
I'm thinking 3" high at 100, that might give me a lower drop at 300.
    What do you think?
I must route out my ballistics software, never needed it before now!
    Cheers

    Hi guys,

    New to this.

I have sporter barrel CZ527 in 204. awsome calibre on rabbits or foxes. Had 223 got rid of it. Cheap ammo was useless. Find 204 accurate and effective out to 300 yards +

They are fairly busted up alright. I use them to bait magpies or grey crows

Rabbits are all good for the pot with .223!
Does'nt every confident shooter go for head shots I've popped plenty of heads at around the +/-300 mark;) !
