    Hey all,

Found this thread so may as well give you a hand.. It can be a bit of minefield at times.

There are 2 current MS certification paths for programmers. Both revolve around the .NET technologies.

The older one is the MCAD/MCSD.NET route. This is the certification for .NET 1.1. The MCAD.NET involves 2 core exams and 1 elective. The MCSD.NET is an extension of the MCAD.NET with 2 more exams

    Website:

    MCAD - http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcad/default.mspx
    MCSD - http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcsd/default.mspx

For the MCAD the core exams are

    70-310/70-320 - .NET Components & XML Web Services (either in VB.NET (310) or C#(320)

70-305/306 or 70-315/316 .. Choose either Web or Windows tracks in either VB.NET or C#

Electives can be choosen from a range of MCPs/MCTS such as 70-229 (SQL Server 2000 MCP), 70-431(SQL Server 2005 MCTS)

You can also use one of the cores as an elective. For example say you did the Web one (70-305 or 70-315) you can use 70-306 or 70-316 as your elective and vice versa.

You cannot use the 70-315 if you did 70-305 as it is the same exam in a different language.

To complete the MCSD you do the following

    You need 70-300, 70-310, 70-305/315, 70-306/316 and 1 other elective MCP. A total of 5 exams.

The newer .NET 2.0 certifications are the MPCD and they are divided into 3 tracks

    MCPD Web - http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcpd/webdev/
    MCPD Windows - http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcpd/windev/
    MCPD Enterprise Applications - http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcpd/entapp/

Each of the 3 requires the 70-536 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0—Application Development Foundation. From there you take the relevant exam for the MCPD you are studying such as the Web Applications or Windows Applications to complete the MCTS certification. After that its the PRO exam which gives you the MCPD certification

For example to get the MCPD Web applications developer you need

    70-528 - Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 - Web-Based Client Development
70-536 - Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0—Application Development Foundation
70-547 - Designing and Developing Web Applications by Using the Microsoft .NET Framework

Now if you complete the MCPD Web and wanted to go for the Windows certification it would require only 2 exams as you have already got the 70-536 exam.

You may have noticed that there arent exam numbers for the different languages. Thats because MS realised how confusing it was for the MCAD/MCSD.NET and now when you sit the exam you get to choose the language when you start it. They are the same topics covered it just depends on the syntax of the language you are using and they are very similar anyways.

Right that covers the basic of what tracks you can do.
