Tax exemption for artists

Somebody told me that as an artist (musician / drawing) I can register as an artist and pay less tax. I'm leaving my day job as between them all, I'm doing a 70 hour week at the moment. How do I go about this? I know very little about the tax system etc. Thanks, merlin
