Actually very good point.. who would go to a top flight club NOT in the champions league..

Probably a huge factor in the Hargreaves move.

I would doubt the credibility of the Ribery story. He has been saying all year that he would only leave Marseille if they failed to qualify for the champions league. But they qualified, and now he's left them for Bayern who wont be in the champions league next year?

It cetainly looks like he may be going here's another source but with a more realistic fee of 25 million euro . Original source must have had a typo.

Franz Beckenbauer came out on German TV today and said that they had tied up a deal for Ribery worth 25 million Euro. They have agreed terms with OM and the player. Ribery himself has stated to Le Equipe on Saturday that he wants to move to a big club and that he wouldn't care if the club doesn't play in the CL for a season. Seems to be a big indication that it is Bayern. The Sueddeutsche Zeitung (very reliable) states that Ribery himself has confirmed the move.

He is expected to arrive in Munich for the medical on Thursday (after the International Game) and to sign on friday.

    Some usually reliable german links:

With that Bayern bring their spending to this summer to around 60 mil. for 4 players (Luca Toni, Ribery, Sosa and Janssen), plus two free transfers (Ze Roberto from Santos and Altintop from Schalke). They are akso expected to sign Klose in the next few days.

Charlton have made combative defender Patrick 'Paddy' McCarthy their third
    signing of the summer.

The Irish centre-back joined Alan Pardew's Valley revolution from
Championship rivals Leicester City on Wednesday for an initial fee of
    £650,000.

Dublin-born McCarthy, who has signed a four-year deal, skippered the Foxes
last term and made a total of 82 appearances for the club after joining from
    Manchester City in March 2005.

Charlton plc chairman Richard Murray said: "We're very pleased to make
    Patrick our latest signing.
"He has all the right attributes and that fact he was captain of Leicester
City shows he is a leader and proven at Championship level."
McCarthy completes a hat-trick of summer signings from Pardew as he shapes a
squad for a Championship challenge next season.
The Valley boss has already snapped up strikers Chris Iwelumo and Luke
Varney from Colchester United and Crewe Alexandra respectively while winger
Martin Christensen signed a pre-contract deal in March and striker Chris
Dickson arrived from Dulwich Hamlet in the same month.

Parker signs for West Ham for 7mil http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/w/west_ham_utd/6706955.stm

Klose confirms hes moving to Munich, although not a done deal yet http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/07062007/1/bayern-klose-striker-coup.html

Assuming that happens, they have a forward selection now of Podolski, Klose, Toni, Santa Cruz, Makaay - not too shabby (although one of them will probably leave now).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,013 ✭✭✭✭eirebhoy

    Makaay is leaving.

Bayern today officially unveiled the signings of Ribery und Luca Toni. Klose to follow within days.

Rumour is that Makaay might leave for PSV, Porto or Lyon, but I personally don't think he will.

Wonder how Podolski will fare next season seeing as he didn't exactly do much clubwise to warrant a regular place this season and i can't see him getting picked ahead of Klose, Toni or Makaay at the moment. In a perfect world he'd go back to cologne and help them get promoted again:)

I can't understand any of this...Bayern failed to qualify for the Champions' League yet they're still able to attract top quality?!

Favorites for the German league is a big attraction, will defo be in the CL next season, they seem like a good prospect to me.

Oh God yes. I have a Cologne jersey with Podolski on the back that he signed for me after his last ever training session with the club.

    1. FC KÖLN!!!

Jeremie Aliadiere on his way to Boro apparently. I really hope he isnt a straight replacement for Viduka, or the Boro fans will be mighty unhappy!

Looks like Tuncay is heading to 'Boro on a free. Excellent player - can play both wings, upfront, attacking-mid.

He was a bit of a legend in FM05. Never seen him play IRL though.

Tal Ben Haim finally signs a four year deal with chelsea on a free transfer, good signing for them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,010 ✭✭✭besty

It seems like Chelsea are just making a point in making so many free signings...

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 15,001 ✭✭✭✭Pepe LeFrits

Chelsea just need to pad their squad, they don't need any players who are exceptional so signing a few average players on frees makes sense.

Mourinho going on about it in the press like he's some kind of master wheeler-dealer working in the most difficult circumstances is pretty funny though.

Chelsea just need to pad their squad if they want to stick to a 4-4-2 with four central midfielders, which they seem to be doing. But I think that Mourinho might want to go back to the 4-3-3 a little, in which case, they need another winger.

especially if robben leaves for Real as is widely reported as being close

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,009 ✭✭✭kronsington

    robben isn't going anywhere

    why ya say that?

Because he said it himself, he's in the closing stages of the contract, its SWP that will prob go, in that case a winger could come in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,894 ✭✭✭evad_lhorg

well according to teamtalk SWP can leave for 10mil

Derby have made their first foray into the transfer market and gotten Rob Earnshaw for 3.5 mill. Good buy i think for the money. He'll get you goals and i could see him doing well in a creative team like Derby's, that is if they can hang onto their youngsters like Barnes.

Absolutely gutted by that. Nobody knew about the buy out clause that much but Derby happened to know exactly how much to bid to activate it. The whole deal stinks. Thanks Earnie but hopefully we'll be swapping leagues next season. Cureton has signed for us & Freddy Eastwood is coming to talk to us.

By creative do you mean launching the ball up to howard all the time? They seem quite one dimensional.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,198 ✭✭✭kensutz

Nothing creative about them at all.

    :)

Good to hear Arteta and Cahill signed new contracts. Hope to see Jagielka in next week followed by Richardson and hopefully Smithy or Nugent.

Confirmed we've signed Jamie Cureton. He comes back to the club he began his career with, absolutely delighted.

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 15,001 ✭✭✭✭Pepe LeFrits

    lol, creative, Derby

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,081 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

ok ok i take it back, admittedly i haven't watched them that much, just seen highlight reels of Giles Barnes so threw in the creative thing for that :o Still a good buy for them though!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,013 ✭✭✭✭eirebhoy

Barca sign Abidal. They're building a true dream team. Still favourites to get Chivu who would be a crucial signing. Puyol is out til October. Deco is apparantly for sale but no bids for him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,081 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

My god they really are going for it! Maybe one more top notch DMF (Edmilson is out for 4-6 months and may be going to newcastle anyway) to compensate for the 4 ultra attacking players and they'll be sorted!
If they get it right, will be incredible to watch next season!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,203 ✭✭✭Attractive Nun

Lord, Barcelona are looking fantastic. Someone like Mascherano would have been perfect for them. There are still a few weak links in the team if it's to be the complete dream team, however (I'm thinking of Valdez and Puyol), and the problem from their point of view is that they're both Spanish. What's the rule about the number of Spaniards that have to be in the team? Because at the moment, Xavi and Iniesta - plus some of the nationalised players - are the only ones worth talking about.

Anyway, who do we reckon will be forced out by Barca's signings? Any or all of Gudjonsen, Motta, Giuly, Saviola, Ezquerro and Deco could be up for grabs - maybe even Ronaldinho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,561 ✭✭✭✭yabadabado

barcelona really seem to be goin for it.if they cud get a top DM they wud be unreal .they bought yaya toure will he be good enough for the dm role havnt seen much of him id say messi will take deco place in midfield and they will have a front 3 of ron, etto and henry if they can keep all there players it should be exciting stuff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,161 ✭✭✭Average-Ro

I highly doubt Messi is strong enough for a centrel midfield role. Besides, even if Deco leaves, they still have Iniesta, Xavi and Yaya Toure.

Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has invited unsettled Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko to slap in a transfer request.

I hope he sticks it out, he is a quality player. As with most things, ya hype it up too much and ya get let down. He'll show his quality, wait and see.

One less striker "target" to worry about. We signed David Marshall, Julien Brellier and will unveil David Strihavka possibly tomorrow.

    Teddy Sherringham to Colchester.

Yaya Toure looks like the likely candidate for the DM role at Barca but that really doesn't suit him. He's an elegant ball-playing midfielder. His talent is his play ON the ball, not off it.
