Looking for Wireless advice

    Hi

Have eircom broadband plus (wired) - just upgraded my laptop to a wireless model and want to go wireless as we have an xbox 360 and Wii as well as a laptop and a desktop and I want to hook all four up online wirelessly.

Looking for the best company to go with - I would like to stay with Eircom but they won't give me a wireless router unless I give them 98 quid - although if I was a new customer they'd give it to me for nothing (thats another story).

So I have been looking at various websites but there are so many that I thought I'd ask those in the know for a bit of advice before taking the plunge.

I need something that will take four devices at once without a problem - i am happy to leave the phone with eircom but would consider a phone/broadband package if it was really good. I hate NTL by the way and have only recently gotten rid of their tv service so they may be out of the running.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Since you already have a broadband service, a wireless router is all you need, could probably pick up a second hand one on adverts for <€40.

That's if you're happy enough with your service as it is?

    EDIT: something like these

Cheers - hadn't considered just gettting a router - this sounds like the best option for me - save all the hasssle of swithching operators.

I will check out th elinks.

    Hi

Had a look on the web and around a few shops and realised something ........... I don't have a clue what I'm doing.

A few of the links in the FAQs seem to be down, but all I need to know is whether I can simply replace my wired router with a new wireless one - do I just plug the existing into the wireless router and bingo?

Also I noticed there are wirelss modem/routers and just routers - which do I need?

My desktop pc does not have a wireless card - can I continue to wire into the router via ethernet cable but have laptop and consoles wirelessly connected?

Sorry for being a pain - thanks for any advice

What you're looking for is a wireless ASDL modem like this. This will allow you to replace your existing modem. You will be able to connect to it via ethernet cable for your PC and wireless for everything else.

This is a very popular model too http://netgear.co.uk/wireless_adslrouter_dg834g.php

and should be easily available. It is very easy to set up too and the setting you need are as follows (presuming you stay with Eircom that is)
    Username: eircom
    Password: broadband1
    Encapsulation: PPPoE
    Multiplexing: LLC Based
    VPI: 8
    VCI: 35

Dont forget to turn on the security when you set up your wireless network.
Ask again here if you have any problems with it.

connecting into the usb and eithernet ports at the same, would that work on a normal wired broadband modem to connect two computers?

i bought one for €10 but it doesnt have a modem built in :( the one i got with it was craptastic but the WRT54G is probably one of the best consumer grade wifi routers out there

Not to sure what your asking.

    If your asking about whether to use the USB or Ethernet option then;

Some routers have a USB option for older computers, but if you have an Ethernet port on the back of your PC then I would strongly advise using that over the USB port.

If one PC had an ethernet port and another didn't, and you didn't want to go wireless.. then I believe (but iv never tried it) PC1 can be connected to the Ethernet Port using an Ethernet Cable and PC2 can be connected via the USB Port (not recommend) wired.

If you were asking can one PC be wired into the router using a cable and another be wireless - then yes, you can. PC1 can be directly connected via an Ethernet Cable and PC2 can have a wireless adapter and connect wireless.

i have one computer connected into the modem (not wireless modem) using usb. but if i connect a cable to the eithernet and brought it to a different computer would both work at the same time?

See below, quoted from my earlier post.

So, yes 1 PC can be connected via USB and 1 via Ethernet cable. (Not tested, so I cant guarantee it but id imagine it will)
