Joe Higgins has conceded defeat in Dublin West, meaning Joan Burton will retain her seat. Also, Claire Daly has no chance in Dublin North despite some predictions that she would poll well. Thus, no Socialist Party members in the 30th Dail.

Yeah, a shame he didn't make it but DW should really have 4 seats at this stage!

Maybe so, but I live in his constituency and he has little to show for that time.

Love him or loathe him, you have to admit the 30th Dáil will be a poorer place (certainly less entertaining!) without Joe Higgins

    :(:(

He will be sadly missed by Dail observers he also added a bit of humour, Bertie will be glad he is gone I'm sure.

Confirmed, Joe Higgins loses seat in close battle, behind by 400 votes or so I think.

Leo Varadkar, FG, makes the gain and got the 2nd seat.

Brian Lenihan topped the poll, in this 3-seater.

    SP Loss
    FG Gain

    A Dail Loss with Joe's absence .....

Joe Higgins is highly regarded by many people (including most parties and many right-wing inclined people) as an utterly outstanding worker for his constituents.

To say Joe Higgins has done little for Dublin West is laughable

Sad to see Joe Higgins go as others have said he was one of the most entertaining TD's to see in action. Glad to see Joan Bruton got back in.

Two points regarding this. First, unlike yourself and the right wing parties I'm a resident in his constituency. Secondly, his vote is significantly down on 2002, thus the people of the constituency spoke. This should act as a measure of his work in the area.

He's done at least as much as the poll topper in DW

In fairness, Cochrane is pretty reliable and he has seen the figures at the count and is standing by his call

I hope you have it on ice ;) . It wouldn't surprise me if a total recount is called if the vote is really close and at the moment it looks that way.
It could be sometime tomorrow afternoon before you can start knocking back the champers :p.

RTÉ pundits are saying it could come down to less than 100 votes.

    Crazy stuff.

McD has been taught a lesson here. And its one that the rest of the politicians need to take note of too.

The politicians work for the people. McD thought he was God and had nobody to answer to.
    How wrong was he.

Like Deepblue, I say put it back in the fridge. I'll believe it when I see it confirmed that he's actually out.

Then it'll be time to open the champers! Until then just keep sending bad thought the Gruppenfuhrers way.
