Just how bad is this? :

    886 kb/s Download

    42 kb/s Upload

I pay for eircom 2mb broadband every month.

What can I do to improve my speed?

Why is the service not better?

I use the internet on my laptop from a netopia
router with a dsl line conneced through the phone socket.

    ???

Check what speed your modem is connected at. I'm not sure how to do it with netopia but the Zxyel from BT has a Stats page. It will report the Up and Down connections in kbps - this is what the modem is connected at - not the current speed.

Eircom may have it wrong on their side.

Smart Telecom 4MB product, Limerick (Roches st. Exchange). I always get 520KB/s though :D

Anybody who gets poor ping times from smart, ask them to check your line to see if it's safe to turn off interleaving, made a big difference for me ping wise

I used to work with one of Irelands DSL providers (not naming names), when advertised that you will get a 2MB line, 1mb line, etc, it is not a guaranteed line speed, its a maximum, i.e. you'll not get faster speeds.

There are a huge number of factors if your speedtest is low in comparison to your 'linespeed', a few are
    -distance from nearest switch/router
-number of other users on the same switch
-and probably the best one is if there is an electric fence anywhere near the cabling, the noise (electric noise) from the fence can disrupt the portion of the cable that carries the DSL bandwidth.

However, this is pretty amazing, given that it's in Peterswell, Co. Galway, 30 km outside Galway City, in the middle of nowhere and we're talking mobile broadband, not fixed wireless.

Just the upstream seems to be chronic for 3.

Aye - I'm in the back of beyond too.. near Drumandoora, Co Clare

For some unknown reason Eircom thinks Im an overly annoyed customer with my 2MB package, as I have spent so much time on the phone with them complaining to there customer service in Delhi

Worked reasonably well until Dec, then nose dived, I live about 10 mins walk away from St Stephens green but do I really need to rant about why this is a joke ?

    230149956.png

Trust me any time of time of day and night, I dont think I have broken download of 140 in 3 weeks. Time to move on I think
