Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    "windows: delayed read error"
any one help me with this,
this some times comes up in the corner of my screen(beside the clock)
an when it does happen either one of my HDD wont be regonised or my printer wont,

im guessing its something to do wit my USB ports,

with 4 usb ports in the back and 2 in the front::
i have 3 external HDD all coming out of the main USB card
i have a usb hub that my printer an mouse run off

the 2 ports on the front have been dodgy from the start, i only use these for mp3,phone, camera etc. sometimes they work but not always

am i over loading the USB?

    any ideas??

As this is an existing build dealing with delayed write errors I will move this into the Windows forum.

You might be on the right track with the USB could be worth getting another PCI USB2 controller and run the HD's directly off that.

Could also be some sort of software problem there are a lot of various fixes for USB delayed write errors on Google.

Have you ever used some sort of tweaking software to mess with Windows ?

Have you got service pack 2 installed ?

Definitely an issue with the external drives and USB. I've seen numerous times "Delayed Write Failure" with network drives, when connectivity is suddenly lost. I would suspect you're experiencing a similar phenomenon here.

3 external drives is quite a bit :)

    It may be worth your while investing in a proper powered USB hub;

    For example.

Or if you want to go all out, get yourself a self-contained NAS, such as:

You can either put your external drives into one of these, or get one with enough USB connectivity for your drives.

I dont think the powered hub is going to work here , that will just extend the already overloaded USB channel , and the situation will remain exactly the same as it is now.
The USB bandwidth is shared between all devices on the channel and with 3 hard drives on there its stretched to the limit.

You need to add an extra USB channel , the best way to do this is with a PCI card , and the good news is its cheap !!

mathias, you are 100% correct in your synopsis, I have encountered this problem many times & it's just as simple as this, many scanners, printers, Skype Dual Tech phones & especially external HDD do not like using USB Hubs, they definitely require their own onboard USB source & in this case an extra PCI card is the way to go.
