Akira-Dogtanian?

Hi folks,

First time poster here, decided to check out anime more after watching Vampire Hunter Bloodlust. Started watching Akira last night and I kept wondering where I hear the actor that voiced Kaneda before. After a while I think I got it, he also voiced Dogtanian from those Dogtanian cartoons that RTÉ used to show.

Am I right? This was wrecking my head last night.

Must check out some of the anime recommended here.

That's pretty cool. Had Leonardo as a possibility as well, but ruled him out.

It was completely wrecking my head. Akira seems to be pretty good so far (DISCLAIMER: Newbie comment. ), must watch the rest tonight.

Akira's always the top starting-point for anime newbies. :P
Cam Clarke has an awesome voice, no doubt about it.

Well, I watched it all.

Good show, liked the gritty atmosphere and the animation. I get the feeling though that they probably cut a lot of the story that was in the manga to fit it into a 2 hour animation.

Tempted to get all the volumes of the manga just to check it out my theory.

Have Perfect Blue to watch tonight (yes, I know I'm checking out all the animes that a newbie checks out first, but hey, I have to start out somewhere. )

Yeah, there's a chock full amount of stuff cut from the manga, but a lot of people forget that Otomo started the film only when he was half-way through drawing the second volume of the manga. The manga is pricey, but you will not regret it in anyway possible.

The Manga is one of the best pieces of work I've ever read. Total masterpiece. Blew my mind away when I was a young un and still does to this day. must read for science fiction fans. Be they anime/manga fans or not.

I've been hooked on everything Akira since.


Oh and yeah, Cam Clarke...I really hate his voice

Most fans like it as it was the very first dub and they grew up on it...
My first Akira experience was the subtitled version taped from channel 4 in the early nineties. So I don't have any such connection. If I'm watching it now it's either the original Japanese or the newer Dub with the guy from The Power Rangers. (Not that I like The Power Rangers in any way..:p)

Man, it's no wonder I prefer the first english dub.
I could have sworn the first english dub had more cursing in it than the new-fangled one I was lumped with when I bought the DVD ... anyone compared them in that regard? m'I just imagining it?

Some swear words were left out of the original dub but are still in the Japanese
sub. Like Tetsuo saying "f uck" when he gets run down and has to pick his bike up in the first chase scene.

Not that I buy anime for swearing. If you want swearing, rent a bloody Roy Chubby Brown dvd

It wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me either, but I just can't help feeling something was robbed from the experience... less gritty or something.
"Here you go, here's a nice cleaned up version"... I spent most of the film wondering what else they changed to protect my delicate sensibilities :rolleyes:

I believe swearing has a legitimate place well above crass gutter humour. It's his complete reliance on shock value that makes him an unfunny, talentless muppet, not the swearing IMO.
Of course we all have fond memories of UTV's saturday night films... Bruce Willis calling the terrorists 'melon farmers' didn't quite carry the same weight of emotion.

Although I think a lot of swearing is actually added in translation to English....

Profanity in Japanese is more down to how politeness protocols in the language are ignored... that sort of thing doesn't translate to English, so they just add swearing instead to get the message across.
