i could never understand the mentally who uninvited throws there oar in and offers advice on something that is none of their business

one plus side might be he simply fancies you but still have they nothing better to do

the amount of "gym jerks" articles iv been seeing recently must mean there are alot of them around but i think its just crazy

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,234 ✭✭✭Malteaser!

See that really wrecks my head when people do that, i always think that if you were a guy in a free weights area he wouldnt of said anything to you. Such bloody double standards!

haha...so true, the amount of lads I've seen with terrible form and nothing is ever said to them yet their own friends feel the need to come and tell me I'm doing something wrong!! When I'm not in such a p!sser it makes me lol!!
The only thing you can do in these situations is be more informed than the guy trying to give you advice. Just say "actually, if you had read Smyth et al in the Journal of how not to be a gym dick you would know that what I'm doing is excellent training to kick guys butts"

haha, i wish i had the guts!! The thing is i knew that what he was saying was wrong and would actually hurt my back more then any deadlift i was doing but for some reason i just stood there and took it, and then when he walked away all the things i could have said came flooding into my head!!
I'm new enough to this lark to welcome people coming over to help me in the gym. There are one or two super people in the TCD gym who I readily take advice from. I've never felt it was because I am a woman. Then again g'em probably had them all well trained before I ever arrived

This is the funny thing,he had actually been sitting there for me and Hanley's entire set(we were alternating between squats and deadlifts like) and could clearly see that i was getting help and being shown how to do it correctly and still felt the need to come over. It's not as if i was on my own and looked like i was lost and needed a hand, he specifically waited until Hanley had just started a set and i was literally standing over the bar as if i was going to pick it up to come up to me and 'advice' me!!

yeah helpful people are great, its a lot easier for someone else to see what your doing wrong than yourself, but it sounded from mal's post that he was just down right condenscing.

That's so true. But like Hanley said, he has just taken a break from the one arm machine curls and tbh I have never seen him (he's been there averytime I have) do much more than that! Maybe I'm wrong with this attitude, but if i had seen the guy lift some actual weight with some proper form I might have been more open to suggestion!

Dont worry about the paronaid feeling of everyone looking at you, I used to get that a good bit in crunch but you do get used to it.

Normally i don't but Tuesday was weird, there were lads that I knew from various things over the years and i was just aware that they were looking and it was kinda off putting!!

But on the brightside at least somebody that wasn't my boyfriend actually talked to me the free weights section...I was getting a bit jealous of all the new friends he was making in there... :p

What do I know tho? Besides, those squats were gonna hurt my knees.

I had to lol here, puts a whole new perspective on his "advice".

The few deadlifts I've seen you do have been very good and that was with about 5 inches extra ROM!

    3p x 2 x 12

    4p x 10

Today was my very first day to use the free weights section on my own and my fist time to do squats on my own also........scary stuff altogether!!

It may not read as much but I flipping well kicked last weeks squats session's ass...every single thing i did was an increase in weight so I'm pretty delighted at the moment!!

This last week has been the most busy, stressful week in a long time, I genuinely had no time to get into the gym! Hopefully all that stress is in the past now and I can get myself back into a routine again!!

To be totally honest I've been too embarrassed to put my total calorie intake up here any more, it's gotten unbelievable bad so saying that my diet needs to be put on priority is a bit of an understatement!

As a result of the stressful week and bad diet my skin has gotten really really bad again, went into the doctor this morning and he referred me to a specialist in Beaumont to try and get to the bottom of it! Everything just seems to be all over the place at the moment but i feel so run down I literally don't have the energy to get my ass in gear!! UGH

At least the gym is going well!! :)

    Still delighted from earlier!! :):):)

    Ledge. Some fab work today.

Everything's looking so much more solid.

    Deadlifts:

    20kg x 2 x 10

    40kg x 5

    50kg x 3

    55kg x 2 x 3

    60kg x 2 x 3

    65kg x 2 x 3

    Sumos:

    20kg x 2 x 10

    30kg x 4 x 5

    Pulldowns:

    3p x 10

    4p x 2 x 10

    One Arm Dumbbell Rows:

    10kg x 2 x 10

    Reverse barbell Curls

    10kg x 10

    15kg x 8

Funny thing happened with teh deadlifts...i loaded up 15kg on either side and somehow managed to add them together to make 60(including the bar), So lucy picks up the bar, wondering why the hell it feels so light, thinking somehow I'd magically gotten waayyy stronger in the last week...popped 2.5s on either end...lifted it for three, again went up easy!! Then i copped that i was actually only lifting 55kg not 65kg...i was flipping raging!!

But when i put 60kg in the bar surprisingly felt nice and easy, so tried 65kg and again it felt alright!! I felt a tiny twinge in the bottom of my back though so decided to just leave it at the 2 sets...overall I'm quite happy though!!

When i was taking a break from the deadlifts some dude came over and just picked my bar up off the floor and carried it over to a bench!! Tbh i just stood there in shock wondering how i was gonna go over and ask for it back but he noticed me starring and came back over asking if he'd taken it on me and went to give it back. I told him to leave it, that I'd just use another bar but he kept going on about how he was sorry and kept trying to give it back to me. I just went over to the other bar anyway and he followed me over to helped me unload the weight that was on it and reload it with my weight, after that he pretty much helped me with the enitre session, he was incredibly nice and showed me ways to improve what i was doing...a Hanley substitute for the day basically! but YAY to non-patronizing helpful people in the gym!! :):)

oh and i love how i'm able to lift over my own body weight now...its such a good feeling!! :)

Funny how the real lifters and not the posers are the ones who'll load and unload other peoples bars even tho they could hardly do with the extra work...

Those deadlifts are just savage btw. The sumos seem to be coming along well too!

    :)

Bitta of funny mood today...i went in and both squat racks were being used, in fact everything i wanted to use was being used so i was hanging around for a bit, lacked a bit of concentration after that, i was hoping to get 40kg for the squat but i got really bad pins and needles in my arm so i stopped before it went totally numb!!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,981 ✭✭✭✭Hanley

Wowzers... just a BIT of an improvement there ;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,234 ✭✭✭Malteaser!

    oh dear....

Pizza for breakfast, KFC for lunch, Macdonalds for dinner, beef stragonoff and rice, two peices of pavalova for dessert cannot help me towards my quest for leanness!!

To say today was a bit of disaster is just a slight exaggeration, there was bit of a fire in work tonight, i upended two bottles of vodka by mistake loosing about 4 shots each time, then a case of Coors fell off the counter, covering me and everyting else around me in the stuff...this was after i'd just cleaned down everything!!

Oh yea and both my NCT and provisional have expired, sooo did not realise until the lovely garda told me on my way home the other day!!!

I'm kinda laughing here, thinking about what else could possibly go wrong....

Anyways, I'm gonna go to bed now and try and forget about today, tomorrow's another day and all that....

Weigh in this morning: 63.5kg

Actually I'm not that surprised at that, not too bothered about the actual figure as such, just concerned about my deadlift. That's to say, i had gotten quite used to the thought that when i pulled 120kg it was going to be double my bodyweight!

The target has been set at 120kg and that's not budging so the variable that's going to have to change in the weight.

Now originally I set up an 8 week plan, that is after 8 weeks I'd be sitting comfy at 60kg. Unfortunately, when I actually switched my brain on this morning I remembered that I'm going away in three weeks which is going to put a major spanner in things.

Basically I'm going on a motorbike trip for two weeks covering all of France, It's gonna be hella exciting but squeezing a perfect diet around gas station stops etc is going to be very tough.

However, I"m determined, so it begins today regardless. I have to say I'm very excited about all this. I love having short term goals to aim for and this is just the kind of structure I was after!!

This summer Ive lived off skipped breakfasts, fast food and rediculously unhealthy dinners.

Been to the doctor also about my skin, it's nothing diet related apparantly and I've been referred to a dermatologist in Beaumont so I'm also really excited about getting that cleared up!!!

So I'm thinking I'll do a daily total calarie intake here, maybe post a link to my fitdat, I'll decide eitherway as the days go by...

Oh yea and weekly updates in my weight and stuff here! Might throw up some photos at the halfway point and the end!!

    Measurements:

    Waist: 25in
    Hips: 32.5in
    Bum:35in
    Calf:12in
    Arm:10in

Forgot to measure my thigh...I'll do it later!!

Righteo, that's quite enough Ramblings from me...to the gym i go...

EDIT: Decided to throw some pics up now...

hmmm, truthfully I think you may have to slightly alter your goal, cause I have to say you are going quite lean at the moment so trying to lose over ahlf a stone isn't going to be the easiest. Also to get up to the 120Kg deadlift chances are you are going to put on probably a bit more muscle mass as well chasing that goal making it even harder to try and stay at or below the 60kg mark.

Truthfully I would knock the idea of being at 60kg on the head and instead start measuring your BF levels and then aim for a certain BF%

    Hahhahahahahahaha you're body's so amazing!!

I dunno where the weight's gonna come off but I know oyu'll do it.

Firstly it pisses me off that you're currently able to deadlift more than me. And secondly I'm hella proud of ya!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,234 ✭✭✭Malteaser!

Righteo, just back home...Firstly when i was on my way to the gym today I wasn't really feeling it, however when i got there there was only like 5 other people in the whole weights room so I pretty much felt like i had the whole place to myself and everything started to feel good!!

Today is the first day I can honestly say i deadlifted properly, of course before this I had the form mastered, i knew where my shoulders should be in relation to hands and shins to bar etc but for some reason i just didn't feel it. I really didn't like the lift.

Picked 65kg up, it felt good, not too heavy, on the second attempt I just felt like i was doing something wrong, I didn't feel strong enough to pull it! its pretty much how i felt two weeks ago when i could barely do 62.5kg (i think), but I focused today, determined, I didn't give up like the last time, and it clicked, I don't know what it was but suddenly my legs were driving it, they felt sooooo strong, it was such an awesome feeling!! then I did it again for a third set. I was going to leave it there but I still felt quite energised and decided to give 67.5kg a shot and low and behold I could actually do it!!! :)

Everything else was again, an improvement in weight from last week!! So YAY for getting stronger!! :)

First day today without fast food, chocolate or a fizzy drink in a loooooonnngg time...oh unless we count the choclate milk!!! but sshhuuusshhhh ;)

    Squats:

    20kg x 10

    30kg x 3 x 5

    40kg x 3 x 5

    Leg Press:

    40kg x 3 x 10

    50kg x 2 x 10

    60kg x 2 x 10

    Stiff legged Deadlifts:

    20kg x 2x 10

    30kg x 2 x 10

    Leg Curls:

    3p x 3 x 12

    4p x 12

Flipping wrecked after them squats!! I feel like I've just gotten my breath back now!!

Good day all in all, i felt i was doing the SLDLs wrong somehow, but i couldn't pin point the problem, I just left it at 30kg and plan to get Hanley to show me again how to do them when I'm back training with him again!!

After the leg press my legs were burning in a good way!! Three weeks ago we put 60 on the machine just to see and I felt like i was about to be crushed by it, today they were quick, very quick and felt really strong and definately no 'I'm about to be crushed by this....get it off...get it off...get it off....' kinda moments!!!

As for the squats, delighted really, again my legs felt really strong and every single one was buried below paralell (as if jimbob would allow me to squat if they weren't)

Can't wait to see how my legs feel tomorrow!!! I can imagine!!!
