Sorry if this is the wrong section, please move if it is! My brother-in law wants to setup a small website selling some stuff and asked me could I find anything out about setting one up.

I've seen a lot of websites with this type of layout.

    www.satworld.ie

So im just wondering is this a type of website package you can buy and it'll will have everything you need for an online store and you just have to configure it for your needs. Or would there be a lot more to it?

And how would he go about setting up laser cards etc with it.

Also, how would he go about registering a .ie domain ( seems like so many companies are selling these so havent a clue what they offer different)

    Any info would be appreciated

His appears to have been custom made incorporating paypal. That particular one looks crap anyhow!
    Try oscommerce - http://demo.oscommerce.com/ and www.oscommerce.com

    Talk to Realex (http://www.realex.ie)

IE domain registration varies from around 30 EURO to in excess of 100 EURO.

Just don't forget you need hosting to go with the domain and if you are going to sell online you'll need an SSL cert as well

OSCommerce needs a MySQL database to work.

You could use Cube Cart for the store and 2checkout to handle credit cards (not laser)

Peter & Gerry at http://www.newodyssey.ie/ set this webstore up for me

    http://www.datacleaneurope.ie/eshop/index.php

The back end is really easy to use and adding products / tracking orders etc is a dead easy

I think Zencart is a modified version of osCommerce worth a look as well.

    http://www.zencart.com

From when I looked at it before, it's slightly cleaner and easier to work with. YMMV as usual.

what steps do you have to go through to register a .ie domain for a business that doesnt exist yet and will not exist till website etc is setup?

can you go ahead and buy the domain straight away from somebody like digiweb or will there be forms to be filled out. If so can anyone tell me what exactly has to be done :)

    thanks

If you are going to setup a business simply register the business name with the CRO (http://www.cro.ie) and then you give the CRO number to whichever company you decide on for the domain registration.

Registering the .ie domain before you get the business name is messy - so it's a lot easier to apply for the business name via the CRO first.

They usually process them in a week or so...

    Pretty much

You can do most of it online and then print off the signature page to send in with your payment
