    Hi to all,

Young fella has a Mazda 626 1994 5dr HB. Burning smell comes into the car from outside throught the air vents. Mechanic has checked the brakes twice over and assures me they aren't sticking, which could cause this smell.

Smell eminates from the front of the car, but the two front tyres don't feel hot, but the smell is still there. Almost a burning rubber smell. It might be there just as the car is moving along, doesn't seem to be associated with the brakes, but we can only smell it when the car stops.

wouldn't be the heater fan burning out?

Can smell it outside the car too, whether or not heater fan is blowing

check out the powersteering belt, and the alternator belt (might be one and the same) - might be too tight, or might be cracking up and disintegrating.

Any way to look at the timing belt ? Would hate for that to be breaking up :-O

Might be a rubber pipe rubbing against something ?

Also, check the exhaust system - maybe there's a plastic bag melted onto it underneath the car.

Petrol/fuel smells are very different to burning-rubber smells. Hope it's nothing gross like a dead mouse or something in there

Clutch? Alternator belt? Something touching the exhaust? Is there any noise associated with it? have you had a really good look around under the car to see if anything is out of the ordinary?

I know this is a bit off but we rented a transit one day to move furniture but when ever the clutch was being used heavily an awful burning smell came in through the air vents and you could also smell it outside. Double check the clutch is ok :)
