Why not show the number of current users and guests à la the forums of other organisations ?
Eg. on foot of page in

    http://forums.blueface.ie/index.php

Neither can I understand the mean-mindedness of denying people the right to upload their own avatar . . . If it may happen to be dirty/vulgar/objectionable/extreme/terrorist, etc then the moderators could simply remove it.

    Tak.

That used to be in place but was removed.

If you want a custom avatar you need to subscribe to boards. It also allows you to change the title under your name and access to a few extra forums.

The layout is different for the index on that site. For Boards to show it like that would require loading a page with all the forums listed here (the user count is at the bottom). Maybe it can be done with the current boards.ie index page.

Uploading your own avatar is a subscriber perk. It won't hurt the bank account much and if you enjoy the site then you can donate, totally up to you of course. :)

It was removed a while back...less strain on the servers or something? ('twas really removed to make things a little more awkward for Tar.A while she stalks)

Signatures have to be policed. Have a look at the work that makes: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=252965&page=49
Policing avatars as well would be more work. Mneh. Pass.

What is the charge for having a custom (inoffensive) avatar ?

    Tak.

    Fiver for a month, €13 for a season, €50 for a year.

    Erm, I see them
Currently Active Users: 970 (284 members and 686 guests)

Its also shows who's online too. Does nobody get this?

I think the OP is refering to user's viewing a particular forum and the number of guests also viewing?.
