According to the news of the world: liverpool are ready to let cisse join marseilles on loan in order to make room for owen.

    From Football365.com:
Wigan are launching a slightly ambitious bid to bring Michael Owen back to the Premiership, says the Daily Mirror. The Latics are ready to splash out £10m and then give Owen the chance to leave in January or next summer if a bigger club comes in and they can recoup their money. Despite interest from Liverpool and Newcastle, no club has made Real Madrid a firm offer.

Baros fee has been agreed with Villa for 6.5ish million.
Not a bad figure to get for him.
Lets see if Benetiz can get the CB and RW in time

Rafa is moving for Kuyt it seems (good deal with Villa for Baros I think)

    from bbc
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has hinted that he may move for 25-year-old Feyenoord striker Dirk Kuyt.

He said: "Kuyt is a good striker. Maybe he is cheaper than other players but we will have to see what happens."

Benitez, who again played down links with Real Madrid striker Michael Owen, did admit that reports about him eyeing three centre-backs were true.

They are believed to be Brondby's Daniel Agger, Stuttgart's Fernando Meira and Lukas Sinkiewicz of Cologne.

Agger, 20, is a Denmark international and was involved in his country's 4-1 win over England last Wednesday.

He is also understood to have been watched by Everton and Wigan.

Meira, 27, is a Portuguese international, while 19-year-old Sinkiewicz is rated as a promising prospect.

"I have read in the press about centre-backs and the information was correct," added Benitez.

"The only problem for me is when you read that in the newspapers it means the clubs will put the price up for the player.

I don't think Wigan can afford 8-10 mill myself!

I see Spurs are also interested which might be a problem if Kuyt likes the idea of sticking with a Dutch theme.

They have around 20m left to spend. The chairman Dave Whelan owns JJB Sports. No big players want to join Wigan though. :)

He said all along that he wants a right winger and a central defender..

Now it seems he is gonna buy a striker and a central defender..

Could it be that he sees Cisse out on the right wing?

I will tear my hair out if we get kuyt and not owen...Owen is proven world class while kuyt had a good season in the dutch league, same price...whats he up to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,836 ✭✭✭Vokes

No, in that BBC report posted above, Benitez states that he still wants a right-winger.

looking at the signings benitez still needs to make at this stage, its absolutely shocking the state of the team that houlier left him. the repair job needed on the squad seems to be endless at times

The big difference is that Benetiz is building a squad as opposed to a team.

There is options all over the park even now and thats only at the elevation of two youth players to the first team squad (Warnock/Whitbread).

well yeah, by the word "team" i meant the squad in general that he took over. just very poor in general, from how the younger players were handled and such.

his wastefull use of money has almost left us a 2nd rate power in the premiership, well since souness got the job we've been like that.

i'm seriously hoping rafa gets thing right over the next few years, i doubt liverpool as a club can afford another bad manager without us falling into a really dodgy position.

Dunno if was mentioned but aint goin through 70 pages :P
Was readin on teletext there & fee with Villa has been agreed. Was less than the french club offered but Baros wanted to stay in England.
He has to go through a medical Today or Tomorrow apparently. Didnt hear anything if Solano was included in the deal or not though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,304 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

    few whisperings from koptalk insider

    1) solano can move to anfield if we want him
    2) Cisse could go to marseille (they will use the drogba cash) rafa seemingly is not adverse to the idea of kuyt and owen
    3) we are after a portugese CB who plays in germany meira i think

Baros for a medical in the midlands, does this open the door for owen or the dutch guy Kryt

Does anyone else agree with me that benitez is buying a serious amount of young players under 20, this guy is lookin at the long haul, the odd old player is good for exp, but there is about 12 players under 20 he has his sights on and some he has already signed , with baros medical yesterday, i reckon we will see 2 or 3 signings before next weeks deadline

Football teams can always be improved, that is unless you have the best 22 players in the world, which no-one has. The CL winning team, with the addition of Alonso, was 90% players Benitez inherited from Houllier. So, it wasnt as if it was a team bereft of any talent. Also, Houllier didnt sell Owen, and now Benitez wants to sign him back paying 4-8m extra. Also, if Houllier was there for last season no doubt he would have signed a few players as well to imrpove the squad. Every manager adds a few players every season, that is how the team evolves.

I was early in calling for the end of Houllier's reign, he was given his chance, the team went so far but it was time to try a new approach, however, labelling the team he left as "shocking" is clearly inaccurate.

In terms of the Baros sale to Villa, this is not a good deal for Liverpool money wise. It sounds like it will be 2m less, so thats another 2m down the tubes. I think for the player himself, he may not want to play for Houllier, and I would fully understand that.

Could be something to do with the fact that GH didn't seem to like him at Liverpool and dropped him regularly.
Didn't realy trust him I think.

what right winger is he gonna sign do ye reckon?? hope we get andrade for the CB position, rafa has only a week to sort all this out though i reckon 1 more signing if we're lucky

The Andrade rumours seem to have ceased since he became Euro cup-tied afew weeks back. Seems to be Meira at Stuttgart and possibly Giannakopoulos.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,835 ✭✭✭StickyMcGinty

it says on that link that they rejected a 10 million bid, surely we cant afford that what with only gettin 6 for baros...

why would you want to be a toffee?? their gonna be knocked out of the champions league before they're even in it :D:D:D

really?! buying new players is how teams evolve? u cant be serious. who'd have thunk it.

i'm also well aware houllier didnt sell owen. and what makes u think benitez wants to sign owen back...? did he not just reiterate yesterday that owen is not in his plans?

    baros confirmed gone

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/aston_villa/4154498.stm

cann't say I'm sorry, but I do feel we never saw the best of him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,538 ✭✭✭PiE

Fiver says he scores against us next time we play Villa.

If Rafa pays 10m for Kuijt now instead of using that money for Owen, I'll be quite disappointed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,082 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Im sure Kuyt is a great player and everything and rafa has great confidence in him, but what we really need is the guy who is DEFINATELY gonna get us goals. we have enough potential risks with crouch moro and cisse, if we had Owen we could still keep fingers crossed one or more would have a stormer but we wouldn't be utterly depending on it. We need one sure thing. It should also take a little pressure to perform off the others, eg. Moro and Crouch could put more into setting stuff up for Owen instead of thinking they HAD to score.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

I reckon the renewed interest in Kuyt is Rafa bluffing Real Madrid, I think they'd like to get rid of Owen, Owen wants to leave, everyone at Anfield bar Rafa has stated/suggested it would be a good idea to get him back.

Anyways as I stated on this thread somewhere the deal is largely done. I think the only issue now is price and thats what all this poker tactics carry-on is about. If they ask too much Rafa will get someone else.

    Mike.

Losing Baros and gaining Crouch? Eh, am I the only one who's thinking that (apart from Cisse - or perhaps even including him) Liverpool's strikeforce is looking very ropey indeed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,731 ✭✭✭el rabitos

nah. our strikeforce is built on a dash of hope and alot of wishfull thinking.

Florent Sinama-Pongolle is in line for a shock move to Lyon, reports the Liverpool Way website.

The French Under-21 striker has recently returned from injury, and has been in impressive form for the reserves, scoring a goal in each of the two games he has appeared in. TLW has been informed however that he is headed back to his homeland, with Lyon almost certainly the destination.

Talks are believed to be at an advanced stage, and a deal is expected to be finalised soon. The news will come as a shock to many, as with the severe lack of options available to Rafa Benitez on the right wing, Sinama-Pongolle had been expected to push for a place in the first team. At this point we are not sure if the deal is a loan or permanent transfer.

The player is rumoured to be unsettled after what happened at the end of last season, when he and several others were left behind as the team toured the city on an open top bus. Missing out on a Champions League medal also added to his disillusionment, and barring a last minute hitch he is set to leave the club before the transfer window shuts at the end of August.

got this from the official site. I would guess at least £4m for him. I would hope we keep him as he is definitely talented.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 860 ✭✭✭rondeco

Also if its true its bad form that he never received a champs lge medal. He played an integral part in the group stages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 999 ✭✭✭cregser

I think in Rafa's first year winning the league with Valencia, Spanish commentators were always one about his lack of striking prowess in his team. Nobody could be relied upon for a steady stream of goals. But players like Aimar, Ayala, Baraja etc were knocking them in from time to time and they eventually won the league.

Rafa's always on about getting Gerrard, Alonso, Hyypia etc. to score more goals and these days even Carra's running forward more and more. Maybe Raffa thinks he can turn anyone into a goal scorer and doesn't feel the need for specialised strikers... maybe

I would like to keep Pongolle on. I think he shows the most promise in term of liveliness and technique. But he is small... and tends to get injured easily. His latest was the most inoqious challenge I've ever seen form into a long term injury.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 860 ✭✭✭rondeco

I think he's a great back-up to have for times when we have injuries. He is still only a chap with plenty of development ahead for him. Maybe a loan deal would be a better option for us.

Without a quality striker you put excessive pressure on the midfield to score and this can lead to gaps at the back cos midfield have no faith in their striker and so push on.
I think rafa wants a serious goal getter as it is almost essential if one wants to win premiership. Every lge winner has had one. Including Andy Cole in that list unfortunately!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 999 ✭✭✭cregser

Yeah I think Pongolle has the right attitude to handle that pressure. It doesn't seem like a problem for him. In the few chances he's been given to play he's always looked lively, appeared in the right places, not made any notable mistakes and scored some crucial goals (olympiakos).

Last year he was talking about leaving liverpool because he wasn't getting a chance. But I didn't get the feeling he was moaning (ala Baros and other squad rotation moaners) but rather saying "stuff you if you don't think I'm good enough, let me go so I can make you sorry". I like that attitude :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

I can't believe he didn't get a CL medal while Nunez did, thats a joke

He wasn't even challenged for his latest injury. He got his foot caught in the ground on a pitch in the middle of January that had been used as a rugby pitch a few days earlier.

It could happen to anyone to be fair.

  • Registered Users Posts: 143 ✭✭Waster

I agree with Ron on this. He's a great little player and had some superb games last year such as Olympiakos and Arsenal. He has good potential and I thought that he might nail down the RW spot if we didn't sign anyone new this season. Pace, skill, trickery, crossing, passing and workrate. If he could improve his shooting he would be top notch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,541 ✭✭✭Davei141

Pongolle is such an exciting player, if we let him leave i will be disgusted. That will be 2 young and exciting players (baros) that will no doubt be a class act in time that we have sold. I hope this isnt true.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,731 ✭✭✭el rabitos

meh. the sooner every bit of french is weeded out of the club the better (looking at u too mr.cisse) if only zenden was french too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,894 ✭✭✭evad_lhorg

glad Baros is gone. Im not a Liverpool fan but he was awful. They should put Cisse out of the team and get Owen back in there. Owen and a right sided player would be best imo.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Jan Molby talking on Five Live says Owen will be a Liverpool player by the next Prem game.

Stellios bid back on. Official this time.

Oh and "Aberdeen are lining up a loan deal for striker Florent Sinama Pongolle." says the Daily Record! Cough!
